Huh. Well here's a mixed blessing. A group of some of the biggest cell phone manufacturers in the game, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG, and Nokia, were able to sit down long enough to agree on a single standard for cell phone plugs. The standard? Mini USB? Nope, think smaller.

It's actually Micro USB, a more diminutive version of Mini that was first introduced earlier this year, which means, of course, that most of us are going to have to on one last adapter binge, the next time we pick up a phone, that is, until our friends, the big handset manufacturers get dazzled by the next shiny new version.

Mixed blessing indeed. If they really stick to this as a format, then it's great, even if it's a new format. I first ran across Micro USB on a digicam I picked up a few weeks back, and it's the connector for the phone I'm likely about to buy. My beef, though, is that it's really not much smaller than the small enough mini USB connector, leaving me to wonder what the heck the point of this all is, and why they couldn't have just stuck with mini USB anyway....sigh.

mini USB is too tall for a lot of thinner phones comming out, so micro USB will fit that bill. I hope this goes through, i'm tired of customers complaining about the incompadibility.

Yeah I used to sell phones and that was one major complaint people had was that they had to rebuy chargers because they didn't just use their included home charger...let's all just cross our fingers...:)

You are all so narrowminded.....do you not see 1 charger means no more cla sales???? That is bad. everyone needs a god damn car charger, now we will not sell anymore once this becomes the standard. Everything is a scam, clas are a scam, cell phones are a scam, but they pay my bills and I don't want anyone messing with it!

Thanks for putting it into perspective, capitalist. So you think phone companies should hang on to a wasteful, outdated method that pisses off their customers so your steady pay continues? Last I checked, that wasn't capitalism.

The Moto Q 9h uses this plug also. The people that got prototypes to work with received a mini-to-micro adapter that would allow existing chargers to work since they are apparently electrically compatible. Several sites are charging a too-high $9.95 or so
for the adapters at the moment, but it shouldn't be long before the aftermarket types start making them. So don't ditch the mini chargers yet, they may still be of use.

Yeah, it sounds great, we'll see if it actually happens. Either way it will still take a long while to fully integrate before people stop needing the old CLA's. Better to have happy customers than over filled pockets from rip off sales. ^_^ Finally a simple, single, standard charager!

even if they all use the same micro usb the chargers will not be the same. not all the phones use the same amout of voltage. that is why you can not use a V3 CLA on a HTC phone when it is dead. same connector different voltage.

I hope this does actually happen. I sell phones as well and I can see how this will affect my check... but as a customer I am excited about it. Plus if you're really good you can convince the customer to use that money for another accessory they may not have thought about before. Happy customers = happy salesman.

I have a good feeling about this unholy alliance. I have been selling and modding cell phones for years, and now that there will be at least a Semi-Universal standard, it will make appeasing customers a little easier. Selling our high dollar high profit universal chargers will be harder, but Id rather see ease of use and customer satisfaction than another .35c on my paycheck. The loss of stress would be better than the loss of sales. Plus, Since there are so many charges, I have had to turn people away because I do not have what they need.

And if this new USB port will allow charging at the same time as Data transfer, Im for it.

Finally!! they agree on something that would benefit a great amount of people. The only thing that I'm missing here is if it will have different voltages. We can see it now with the mini USB as some equipments that use it have different voltage and affects the battery, i.e. the Utstarcom PPc6700 can use the Razr charger but it will damage the battery on the long run, and the same happens with the Moto Q and Razr. Let's see what they do with this and also agree with evil juggalo "And if this new USB port will allow charging at the same time as Data transfer, Im for it."

Now, how about laptop manufacturers? Would be cool if public places started having a 5V USB plug for phones and an 18V plug for laptops next to the regular old 120V plugs so we could stop having to carry around bricks. Brick makers would make a fortune selling converters to coffee shops and airports and airlines. We'd all have to carry less stuff around.

The only problem with this is that accessories are what pay peoples salaries. There is a high profit margin in these type of accessories. And there is no way to control the power that you need. So yes all may seem like they fit but now battery cost will go up and you will need them faster. So who wins then? Think people they are not stupid! They will charge you for a new battery like laptops. 100 dollars or a new phone. The average idot will buy another phone. Cell phone maker wins. THINK BIG AND LONG before jumping on the band wagon.

Accessories pay Salaries? Sorry, I just wanted to laugh at that;;

It will be good from a sales perspective, a customer perspective, and a business perspective. I'm all for it... Thank you for finally offering a solution that fits everyone's needs.

I'll just keep my old phone till I have to spend any money. Everything is aimed at corporate profits. Consumers are just a necessary evil to them.

I REALLY THINK THIS WOULD BE
THE WORTH MERGER EVER REASON BEING
THAT ONCE THE CHARGER IS SATURATED
IN THE MARKET THERE WILL BE
NO MORE NEED TO BUY CAR AND HOME CHARGER
FROM ANY VENDORS.I GUARANTEE THE SALES
OF CHARGERS WILL DROP TREMENDOUSLY!!!
MANUFACTER AND DISTRIBUTOR MAKES GROSS
PROFITS ON NEW CHARGERS

Yeah but people today are consumers so when they have the standard charger for there phones, then there going to spend there money on cases, bluetooth, and all the other worthless crap they have for these phones. Why? because Americans love to buy things, anything, it's not a materialistic country there would have to be respect for material first. sorry just ranting. =o

Too bad people don't learn or remember ENGLISH...

ie. Chris doesn't know the difference between "there", "their", and "they're". If you're going to rant, at least do it correctly. Pitiful...
