Memorex & Arbor Day Foundation

After writing my "10 Ways Technology Can Make a Difference" story in which I featured different products and web sites to help the environment and others (such as PhonesForLife.org for the donation of old phones, as well as SanDisk'a contributions to Alzheimer's research with every purple memory card and flash drive sold), here's yet another way consumers can help the planet through technology.

Today, Memorex announced its partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation to plant trees in our national forests, with the sales of the Memorex ReNew line, which "blends patterns and textures inspired by nature with forms and features familiar to electronics." More specifically, each product is said to:

  • Be made from partially recycled plastics
  • Meet RoHS Standards
  • Packaged in recycled cardboard
  • Feature package inserts that include interior product "egg carton" trays made from 100 percent recycled paper
  • Includes inserts and website information for consumer education about reuse and recycling.

For every sale now through November 30, 2007, Memorex will make a donation to the Arbor Day Foundation by adding a minimum of 75,000 trees: The company will fund the planting of three new trees for each ReNew 8-inch Digital Picture Frame (preloaded with nature images); two trees for each ReNew Alarm Clock (preloaded with nature sounds) and ReNew Digital Music Player (preloaded with music); and one tree for each ReNew CD Boombox and ReNew iPod Speaker. Each product is available at a Target store near you.
