We see our fair share of computer bags around the PC Mag offices, each with its own personality. Some have features better suited for travel, while others opt for more fashionable twists. Before you pick the right bag for you though, there are couple things to keep in mind; for example, what other than your laptop do you need to carry? How important is it that your bag be stylish? To name just a couple.
These three bags can all handle laptops with screens up to 15.4 inches, iPods, and cell phones. But each has its own features (our favorites) that help them stand out from the pack:
For Fashionistas: Targus Women's Fandango Tote
This is a laptop bag "designed for women executives" (aka: functional and not fugly). Where this one really wins is in the embellishments: the attention to detail on the bag handles and hardware go a long a way to camouflaging its inner practicality. Aside from the fun fringe and oversized hardware that attach the twin shoulder straps and outer flap-front pocket, though, the Fandango does what it advertises. The inner laptop pocket is fully lined and padded and completely surrounded by other, smaller pouches designed to fit your cell phone, iPod, business cards, pens, files, copies of In Style, what have you. The straps could use a tad more padding, since the weight really adds up once you've stuffed the pockets to the gills.
Favorite Feature: Matching accessories! This laptop bag comes with a coordinated wallet and removable clutch, so you don't have to lug the whole bag outside when you make a coffee run or waste too much time fishing around for your keys or office ID.
Fits Laptops: Up to 15.4 inches.
Purchasing Info: $89.99 from Targus.com
For Business Travelers: Brenthaven ProLite II
There's surely no pocket shortage in this lightweight laptop case. The laptop pocket itself has five-sided protective padding that is strudy without adding too much bulk to the bag. The separate file storage pocket offers ample room for business papers, a quick change of clothes, or even a whole other laptop if need be. But it doesn't end there: If it's a portable gadget, odds are you can find a slot designed for it. The front organizer panel has slots for your iPod, cell phone and PDA, business cards, and assorted other mobile office necessities. For air travelers, the felt-lined easy access pocket on the front of the case is the perfect size for traveling documents like boarding passes, baggage claim checks, and passports. And, if you've packed every nook and cranny of the case, it's gonna get pretty heavy; that's where the heavily padded ergonomic shoulder strap comes into play to ease the inevitable shoulder strain. Or you can use the "wheelie" strap to attach it to the handle of any roller-board suitcase.
Favorite Feature: Keep you're AC power cables from getting lost and tangled by stashing them in the dedicated, outer cord pocket that is the perfect size for a neatly wrapped wire.
Fits Laptops: Up to 15.4 inches.
Purchasing Info: $99.95 from Brenthhaven.com.
For Commuters: Brenthaven Metro
This bag is on the more stylish side of utilitarian. The extra pockets aren't just tacked on like on many other laptop cases. Each one is carefully integrated into the bag's design, though we have to admit that once you've fully stocked each pouch, things do tend toward the bulkier side thus negating the "stylish" sensibility overall. Still, though, everything from the custom iPod pocket to organizer and AC storage is well-thought-out and perfectly suits whatever it is meant to store. And, unlike most of Brenthaven's other bags, the Metro is available in multiple colors (black, blue, green, and chocolate brown). If you need to carry much more than your computer and a couple other portable gadgets, though, this isn't the right bag for you. Its top-loading laptop pocket makes up about 95% of the storage space--but it does include an adjustable foam "core" cushioning system to ensure a tight fit. The shoulder strap is pretty cushy, too.
Favorite Feature: Tired of snaking your iPod headphone wires through zippered pockets? Well, I know I am. This bag has a small, hidden pocket tucked behind the front organizer that's specifically designed for headphone wires--there's even a small pass-through hole that connects the headset pouch to the custom-fit iPod pocket to keep the wires neat and easy to find.
Fits Laptops: Up to 15.4 inches.
Purchasing Info: $69.95 from Brenthhaven.com.

How does it compare against the Targa Getta? TLT029EU I am tired of carrying backpacks when just moving from one floor or cubicle to another looking like a homeless person. I also would like to discretely lug all my other junk--notepad, pencils, cellphones, etc in style.

These are functional but bland for style. Maybe there's a newer post about this topic?
