Last week, Apple breathlessly announced that its notebook market share had climbed, according to June numbers from NPD. That was indeed true; however, we didn't have the other numbers to provide a little context. We do now.

According to Steve Baker of NPD, here's how June shaped up. Numbers indicate percentage of overall U.S. retail sales, for notebooks only:

Toshiba: 27.5
HP (Pavilion): 23.4
Apple: 14.5
Gateway: 10.3
HP (Compaq) 8.3

Obviously Compaq and HP are the same company, so HP's actual share was 31.7 percent, placing it atop the leaderboard. In addition, NPD's numbers exclude Dell (the previous ones included Dell's direct sales; Apple's share was also higher when direct sales were factored in, at 17.6 percent, as the previous post noted.) Apple is still ranked third, however, and its retail share climbed from 11.4 percent in May.

And how much do notebooks mean to overall retail sales? Compare the market share numbers above with these numbers, which factor in notebook and desktop retail sales within the U.S., for June:

HP (Pavilion): 27
Toshiba: 19.3
Apple: 12.8
Gateway: 11.2
HP (Compaq): 10
Acer: 8.5

The rankings track almost identically, except that HP obviously has a strong desktop presence in addition to notebooks.
