Creative issued their contribution to the near critical mass of MP3 player announcements this week, with their latest Zen player, called, simply enough, The Creative ZEN. The player, which was scheduled to be announced later this evening, was leaked via Amazon.com, this morning, showing up on sites like Gizmodo soon after.

The Creative ZEN is available in 4-, 8-, and 16GB varieties and features a 2.5-inch TFT color screen that displays 16.7 million colors. The ZEN can play MP3, WMA, and AAC audio tracks and MPEG 1, 2 and 4, DiVX, XViD and WMV video. The player also features an SD card slot, an FM radio with 32 station presets, a voice recorder, and a personal organizer with Outlook compatibility. The battery should give you an 25 hours of music or five hours of video on a single charge.

Available in September, The Creative ZEN will be priced at $149.99, $199.99, and $299.99, for the 4-,8-, and 16GB models, respectively. Creative will also be offering a variety of accessories designed specifically for the player including a power adapter, armband, and a variety of cases.

This is, finally, the iPod killer. Does everything the new iPod nano does, and MORE! Probably sounds worlds better too, as Creative has been in the music business much much longer than Apple has.

I've read a lot of griping about this player not being HD based. GOOD! HD's take more battery, and don't last as long. If you MUST have an HD player and more than 16gig (80% of 30 gig player owners never use more than 10 gig!) then look toward the Zen Vision:M, duh!

I just ordered the Zen 2GB at creative.com for only $79.99 US (less than hundred bucks even with taxes). 2GB is fine for me as I have many 1,2,4 and a couple of 8GB SD cards that I can use with it. I can't wait to get it as I have heard many good things.
