Clarion, maker of car audio speaker systems, mobile audio/video components, CD changers, amplifiers, alarms, and SD/ CD/ cassette receivers, recently unveiled a compact navigation device specifically for Japanese motorcyclists: the DrivTrax P-5 (DTR-P5). This unique personal navigation device (PND) combines the features of precision guidance technology with an intuitive user interface, along with a highly comprehensive nav database, which includes 11 million searchable addresses, 8 million phone numbers, 487 peripheral information retrieval categories, 39,462 intersection lane and route signboard locations. And an optional casing (the BKA-002) will safeguard the device during a downpour.
The DTR-P5 incorporates Clarion's in-vehicle product technology, blending mobility with music and information: An SD card interface can transform it into a portable MP3/WMA music player or a JPEG/BMP picture viewer, while retaining the USB-port functionality. And one of the most appealing features of this PND is its 4.3-inch-wide liquid-crystal touchscreen display, fuelled by Microsoft Windows CE 5.0. Additional features include Flash storage of up to 2 GB, search and route calculation facility, route display, and voice guidance.
Using an in-built lithium-ion battery, you can operate this device for nearly 4.5 hours. The battery is rechargeable via AC adapter or USB cable, sold with the device.
The DrivTrax's compact size (32 mm x 90.5 mm x 22 mm) and light weight (198g) makes this PND a good traveling companion. The DTR-P5 can be toted either in a pocket or in a handbag. It sells for 19,950 JPY (around $170).
