ati.JPG AMD emailed us to let us know that it has successfully tested a "next-generation" graphics processor against a DisplayPort 1.1 transmitter, a Genesis Microchip DisplayPort receiver. DisplayPort interfaces are expected to be natively supported in ATI Radeon graphics processors in the early 2008 timeframe, the company said.

The DisplayPort spec, first introduced in 2005, was designed to be a standard unified interface for LCD, plasma, CRT and projection displays, and replace the DVI and HDMI standards commonly (?) found today. The 1.1 standard was approved in April.

The DisplayPort connection allows a maximum of 1080p resolution at 24 bits, 50/60Hz over a 15 meter cable. Technically, it can support up to 1 to 4 data pairs Including clock and audio) in a main connection, each with a transfer rate of 1.62 or 2.7 Gbits/s.
