There's a bit of buzz circulating around whether or not Taiwan foundry TSMC will manufacture AMD's microprocessors, after a TSMC analyst meeting alluded to a mystery customer that TSMC will start serving in 2008.

Graphics companies like ATI or Nvidia traditionally outsource their manufacturing to a foundry, as it's cheaper then to spend the several billion dollars necessary to construct and run a fab operation. AMD already has a relationship with TSMC through its graphics subsidiary, ATI. AMD, however, has traditionally worked with Chartered Semiconductor, a TSMC rival. Of course, all of this comes as AMD fine-tunes its "asset light" strategy, of de-emphasizing its own manufacturing and working with third parties to develop manufacturing technologies, if not outright manufacture them. TSMC, as the world's largest foundry, already has a number of big-name customers, so this all could be a tempest in a teapot. Or not.

For now, AMD's mum on the subject, although rumors are spreading that AMD's also testing TSMC-produced chips. Stay tuned.
