The days of staring at polygons on your GPS may be over. The guys at Electronista have unearthed details on TomTom's next generation GPS units. The new units will guide you using real-world images rather than 3D maps. The system would rely on a camera (mounted on the front of your car) to provide the live imagery to your GPS' display. Using image recognition technology, the unit would then pick out landmarks and sync it with the directions from your GPS. TomTom has filed a European patent on the idea, but there's still no word on how soon before we see it here.

Sweet. But if they're going that route, the next step would be to make the whole windshield a ginormous transparent heads up display. With the big line running down the road in front, it'll so feel like driving in Tron.
Just watch out for the MCP!

Wow, that is some wild stuff. I have an XL and am used to the current screen display, but that would be a cool feature.

Holy crap. Very nice idea! I'm so buying one when they come out! I hope the refresh rate is damn good. I can't wait!!!
