Lime Rock, CT -- Nice work, if you can get it. The benefits of being a writer are less about financial rewards than about, say, the personal gratification of creating that first draft of history. Still, somebody's doing okay, or so it seemed at the Lime Rock Park racetrack in tony Litchfield County, Connecticut, during the American LeMans prototype sports car race on July 7. Just a few steps from the busy pedestrian overpass connecting the outfield and infield of the track was the reserved media parking area, as evidenced by this sign, and immediately behind the sign was this pristine Porsche Carrera.
Speaking of comfortable: Lime Rock President Skip Barber (he of the eponymous performance driving schools) before the races offered a plan to help keep the 50-year-old track prospering for another 50 years. A newly formed Lime Rock Club will allow financially comfortable car enthusiasts to drive the twisty, 1.53-mile track at speedbut not flat-out racing20 days a year. Proceeds from the club will help repave the track and put up new buildings. What's the cost to belong? For those who must ask: $100,000 to join, plus $550 a month. And you can bring a friend.
