i335-front.jpg Motorola's iDen phones for Nextel are the sadly ignored wallflowers of any Motorola event, but they're pretty flowers nonetheless. So I wasn't surprised to find at tonight's Motorola get-together two unheralded, untrumpeted new Nextels: the purely iDen i335 (at left) and the combo iDen/EVDO i602 (after the jump.)

The i335 is an entry-level, candy-bar-style walkie-talkie phone that's all about tactile feel: a rubbery keypad, a textured back, and silvery, rubbery sides. It's a lot of fun to hold in your hand, and it has all the usual Nextel functions, including Java and their off-network Direct Talk walkie-talkie system. It's coming by the end of the year.

The i602 is a midrange combo Sprint/Nextel phone that, according to the Motorolan who showed it to me at the event, has EVDO and a 2-megapixel camera but no memory card slot or music player. But according to the product book Motorola handed out after the event, it only has a VGA camera and 1X data. Hmm ... Its screen, while somewhat high-res, is smaller and lower-res than the ic902, the ultra-high-end in the Sprint Nextel line. That one is coming early this fall. Expect both new phones to be quite rugged and to provide the usual blaring Nextel volume.

Many more photos - many more! - after the jump.

The upcoming Motorola i335 for Sprint's Nextel network is a very cute candybar phone, with rubberized keys and green lights under the buttons.

i335-front.jpg

i335-lights.jpg

The i335's sides are pretty basic and spare, with only volume buttons, the walkie-talkie button and a USB port on the left side and nothing on the right side.

i335-left.jpg

i335-right.jpg

i335-back.jpg

The Nextel ic602 isn't a pageant winner in terms of looks: it's a rugged clamshell phone with an extendable antenna and a small, monochrome screen on the outside. But you can bet that antenna and chunky body will give it great sound and reception. The ic602, like Sprint's other hybrid phones, will make phone calls on Sprint's network but walkie-talkie calls on Nextel's network.

Are we sure that hybrid flip isnt the ic602 and not 605?
They've already used 605 for a model number, plus the hybrid phones are using 2's.
ic402, ic502, ic902, etc.

If you cuss up a storm every time you call, of course they're not gonna want your business. Especially if you have a low rate plan. If you don't have reception at home, you shouldn't have kept the phone past the 30 days they give you to return the phone. It is in your terms and condition that coverage is never guaranteed but you do get plenty of time to try it out. Please refrain from making ignorant remarks about a business you know nothing about. I have personally gotten people out of contracts with sprint and other carriers by speaking to them in a professional tone of voice. Next time, you should do some shopping before you buy a phone because it looks cool, unless you're like me and live in a major metro area with great coverage from any tier 1 carrier. I do understand your frustration with customer care, however. The only competant people in the company are in the retentions department. All you have to do if you get upset is call in and ask for retentions. Usually, they just ask if you're thinking of cancelling service and transfer you. If not, just call back and get another rep. Remember, most all phone calls to sprint from your phone are transferred to outsourced call centers in india and canada first, then you have to be transferred back to a US call center.

On another note, these new phones are definitely exciting. There are only a few phones that work on different networks, and the fact that they have a lineup of hybrid phones is great. The reason that they won't let you use the phone on iDEN is because of oversaturated markets. The ic502 was only released initially to these select markets. You may already know this, but the iDEN network is notorious for dropping calls because the towers can't handle the calls. Because of this, Nextel had most of their customers charge back. People were cancelling and selling their phones on the streets where they are used on the Boost network. With hybrid phones, you get better overall coverage with voice, high-speed data and SMS, plus you get to keep the walkie-talkie feature. Maybe we'll see some Rev-A or even Rev-B hybrid phones in the future.

Note: This is a completely unbiased opinion based on my knowledge in the phone industry. I just hope to clear up any confusion as to why Sprint wouldn't allow you to make calls on iDEN. It's the same reason that they switched text messaging to CDMA. Texting on iDEN is worse than the dropped calls. I personally have tested it and took anywhere between 30 minutes and 24 hours to recieve a text on a nextel. These hybrids take 3-10 seconds.

I would like to add the fact that the people who Sprint cancelled were people who called Customer Service so much that they were losing way more money than they were making off them. Every time a customer calls, I believe they lose around $3-5. If you're on a $29.99 plan calling 20+ times a month, it's not worth them to keep you as a business.

True that about the credit thing with sprint Martin. I work for att and we turn people with bad credit down all the time. It's funny because they bitch that our company suck's, but in all reality that's just a big ass headache in the long run, late pays and bitching to customer care. I think how sprint kicks people off their network for bitching too much is great and can't wait until we start... LOL

While James Bond may not be the most well spoken person, I have to say that he brings up an important point: since the merger of Sprint and Nextel, one cannot have the best of both worlds - with respect to their towers, network and phone design.

Furthermore, the "rugged" design of the walkie talkie phones is not visually appealing. Of course, only contractor types utilize a walkie talkie phone, right? I would prefer a less rugged appearance and more like the design of the non-walkie talkie phones, yet with the walkie talkie feature.

And finally, for the rest of you...please try to focus on the points that we are trying to make here in this forum. Rather than focusing on "grammatical" errors, you need to take that to an AOL chat room, of course right after you get your G.E.D. book (not ged book).

i used to have cingular awhile back and i didnt really like them that much. my mom had nextel and she had service just about the same places as me. well now that sprint and nextel have merged together i got a nextel phone. i did have the i860 and let me tell you i didnt like that phone one bit. i couldnt hardly hear anything anyone said and people couldnt hear a thing i said. but just recently i got the new muziq from sprint. i sugest that if you have nextel to switch obver to sprint becuase in the places that nextel doesnt work sprint will. and when i gop visit my great grandparents in minnesota ill know ill have service. and they live in tyler minnesota. you can google it if you loike. but even its the phones roaming im still able to call someone. and the reason that srpint or nextel ended your saervice is because you made to many phone calls to customer service. they just last month i think had an article on msn about how cyou can call customer service or whatever so many times in a month with nextel or sprint. and if they couldnt help you they would end your contract because theu couldnt satisfy you or something like that. hopefully that doesnt happen to me or my mom. just for the record im only 16 and if i typed something wrong im sorry. also, i knw more than you idiots that complain about your service being terminated. its your fualt you called so many times. it wastes their money when your calling them 20 times in 1 hour about something they can probably fix the fist time that you've called them. just stop harrassing them and let them do their job.

and i hope what i wrote made sense. im a little delirious [sp?] at the moment.

The Power Source phones are the best thing to happen to Nextel since the merger. For example you can recieve two-ways during your voice calls. The internet is much faster. If you want more information on these first of it kind phones, STOP BY 3150 NAVARRE AVE, OREGON,OH 43616. IF YOU ASK FOR GREG WE WILL GIVE YOU A FREE CAR CHARGER!!!!!!

Posted by: Travis
July 30, 2007 9:46 PM

Some of these carriers deserve the bitching they are getting. If everything was perfect we wouldnt need customer care would we? In the case of Nextel, it usually takes several calls to get your point across. Some of you CSR's out there may need coaching or more training in one-call resolution. So dont be so quick to dismiss complaining customers as "whining" when there are customers out there with legitimate problems that cant get things accomplished with the less-than-proficient CSR's. The phone's premise is cool, but the form is ugly!

Some of these complaints are valid but I can assure you that Sprint is working to make their customer service experience an exemplary one. Sprint Rep, please do not argue with the customers. As for Shawn, you are not please with Sprint but also not pleased without it! Which one do you truly want. Please make up your mind. Sprint is also investing at least 7-8 billion dollars on improving coverage. With innovative devices like the Blackberry 8830 with unlocked GSM service and the Samsung Upstage, Sprint is working to bring more customers on board. Welcome to Sprint Speed!

OK first off Martin if your so down on everyone that has sprint why are you working there? Good point would probably be your white trash that no other company would hire. But it is true sprint needs to combine the 2 networks for better reception. Around here Sprint sucks but nextel is the bomb but go up the road about 50 miles and its the opposite. By the way Martin I have great credit and I own my own car lot and I am very succesful so before you go calling customers white trash you should think about what you are yourself. If you worked for me your ass would be FIRED.And also sTream AT&T isn't that hot on turning people away either. I get some people on my lot who want to finance through our main finance company and I see their credit reports and DAMN it sucks but yet they have AT&T service. All cell companies suck somewhere even Verizon has their problem areas and they have spent more than anyone to try to make it flawless but nothing is perfect. But assholes like Martin make you wonder how the hell these companies that hire cocksuckers like him stay in business.

Actually, sprint HAS been canceling people that call customer service to much. Their excuse is that "they were not happy anyway" but they don't refund you the money for the phone that you can only use on their network.
If your one of the sprint customers that keep getting charged on their bill for text messaging, after repeatably telling them you don't want it. It happened to me,they got me for six months of it. They asked me if I wanted free text messaging for a month, every time I talked to them, and I told them NO! because I never use it. I caught them three times trying to put it on my account, but the fourth I missed it because I was going over my minutes a lot and just paid the bill. The fact is,there is only one reason they kept putting it on there when I kept having it taken off and told them in no uncertain words that I do not want and never wanted text messaging. They know that sooner or later,a customer will not notice for six months and sprint will get $100 dollars. Now if you wont shut up and suck it down, they will cancel your account. Imagine how angry at sprint YOU would be if you had paid sprint $400 dollars for a new smartphone, and then they canceled your account. Sprint isn't going to give you a refund on it.On the other hand this could work in favor of someone who wants out of their contract, just call customer service repeatedly during your commute to and from work and ask for things they cannot possibly give you. Figure 10 or 20 calls a day over a month, and each call costs sprint money.

For me Nextel is essential-I could not live without international walkie-talkie. I have been in southern Brazil in the middle of nowhere and my partner was up the Cascade mountains in British Colombia camping and we were able to communicate with the click of a button - No other company is offering that type of service. In my line of "government contracting" work this is indispensible...not to mention how many phones times I've dropped my i560 and never had a problem; although I think I will upgrade soon.

I have Nextel currently and agree that it is essential to my life. I am a vol. firefigther along with my boyfriend. We use our nextels constantly with the firehouse. My only complaint is: I live in a smaller town and there are no sprint towers currently, I hope sprint puts more towers around so we are able to buy some of these hybrid phones they are coming out with. As of now we are stuck with just nextel, but that is fine with me...but it would be nice to have the choice because some of them are nice!

I have had nextel for 4 years, and before that my company had a contract for 8 years If so many of my clients weren't nextel costumers I would most likely change carriers. I live in Florida and during the hurricanes over the last few years I can't tell you how many clients I have Lost because they couldn't get ahold of me. I hate the dropped calls on there network but I can say that they are getting better about that, I still get a few maybe 1 0r 2 a week.
I think no matter what it costs them for costumer service the shouldn't be aloud to drop you because you complain to much. They charge you if you cancel your contract so how can they just drop you without some kind of reporcussion? I also don't agree with there insurance plan I mean I pay so much for insurance for the most expensive phones of any other carrier and when something happens to your phone they wan't to charge you over 100$ for a deductible thats crazy. and I don't think it matters how much your account with nextel costs you a month you are still there costumer and they should work hard to keep you so befor any one bad talks my opinion I have 4 phones on my contract, and spend alot of money each month to have nextel. With all of this said I know every company has there good and bads I just wanted to state my feeling about the service that I get From nextel I Believe It could be better.

I work for Sprint as an indirect dealer and I too thought that these phones could be a flop, but I have been very suprised by the success and so have many of our customers. If something sucks for you that does not mean it sucks for everyone. If you can not spell or express yourself about something you are not well versed in then you should keep comments to yourself, no one will listen to an uneducated comment. If there is no sprint service then the phone is not for you or anyone else in a non-sprint area. Duh, common sense. These are great phones and will only have problems like other pieces of technology that may have a technical problem. We are excited about the HYBRID and sell the heck out of it and will continue to do so!!! Long Live Sprint/Nextel Hybrid.

im a sprint together with nextal government rep...
doing trouble shooting, coverage issues, and tech support the powersource phone have the most coverage in the state. i work with peaople everyday asking when new powersource phones are coming out. not for them saying that they are not that good.. its for the reason that peaople like to have one for the most powerful cell phone around. yes they maybe abit more money then normal phones but having the biggest network for celluar coverage and the biggest direct connect technolgey in the world the phones are more then wroth the money. plus the powersource phone run off the sprint internet service whitch is like a broadbrand like speed.

I'm a tech working for a 3rd party dealer, not corp. These are the same type of conversations that I face on a daily basis, whether good or bad. When our company first became a service center, I never recieved much atitudes, but having been. Its ok because who hasn't been happy with their service. I personally dont have a sprint phone yet, but will, but my lit bro had a samsung sprint for almost 4 mos, and no complaints. Anyways, a question to all the CSR's, why is it that everytime I get a customer they are quoting "the customer service person says that all I have to do is goto an authorized service center and they'l swap me out to a new phone because I've had my phone for a year". Now this is my dilemna; if a customer has TEP been with sprint for more than 30 days they would have the warranty. Now, if they didn't have TEP nor within their 30 days of purchase, how is it they have the 1 year warranty, because if your out of the 30 day period with no insuranse, don't the customer have to pay $55 for a replacement? Does anyone have any idea of what I'm talking about?

Posted by: CK
October 19, 2007 4:54 PM

The reason the Powersource phones can't be on both voice networks is the Nextel voice network is packet-switched, it is not cellular. Which is probably why text messages didn't work that well. It will be going away because Sprint must give up the Nextel bandwidth and doesn't need two voice networks. I've had Nextel for 10 years and have never had the constant dropped calls y'all are talking about.

October 20, 2007 10:38 AM

I love the Powersource phones I purchased for myself and my wife. The reception, coverage, and battery life (extended battery) are all WAY better than I've ever had with regular Nextel phones.

Yeah, these phones aren't for everyone, especially if you don't live in a good overlap coverage area, but for those of us who do, it's da bomb!

I personally prefer rugged phones. I'll take function over appearance any day. What good is an attractive phone if you drop it one day and it winds up in a hundred pieces?

Sprint does need to work on customer service. They recently combined billing for PCS and iDEN customers using Ensemble, Nextel's old billing service, which was tops in billing accuracy, prior to the merger.

Martin, I hope you don't work for Sprint. That is a horrible attitude and makes Sprint look bad. I do work for Sprint and the company knows they have problems right now and that is why they are working on solutions. The Hybrid phone is suppossed to reduce drop calls b/c it gets people off the Nextel tower and puts them on a Sprint tower. No one ever said that everyone would have service with this new phone. They are trying to make solutions to help. If you don't have service where you need it, don't complain about it. Return it within the first thirty days and find another carrier. No cell phone company is perfect. I hear people complaining about other companies just as much as Sprint.
By the way, Spirnt is working on a phone that will have Sprint cellular and a radio that will be able to communicate to the Nextel radio. It will not be a Nextel two-way, but will be able to talk with one. This will also not be the perfect solution for everyone, but will help.

Sprint is leading wireless technology wireless carrier. Yes, we have challenges, however the merged company offers solutions that other carriers cannot deliver. This is a HUGE differentiator in my eyes.

Our customer service group is natuarally challenged due to history of system experience. There are individuals that are great answering Sprint billing system question, yet not so great answering Nextel billing system questions and visa versa. It is getting better, slowly but surely.

As far as customers that are cancelled against their own will, there are many carriers to chose from. You must not have been very happy if you were one of the few thousand customers that were cancelled due to excessive calls to our customer service group coupled with continued dissatisfaction. If you are dissatisfied, why would you not want Sprint to pay your bill and waive the early termination fee?

i335 is a great idea and it really not so much the rugged but it really is light to carry and meet military specis like for enviromental changes in wheather may prove useful if you have four seasons a plus is that lots of buisness connect direct it more accured and you can reach the person at any time the service is great no matter were you go I travel alot and you can get service any were never had a problem of course you have your dead zone but that's for public safety but it for a small period of the time any one who really need a cell that is worth it and stylish really will love this i335 REALLY WORTH IT!
