HP%20HDX.JPG

Remember the HP HDX gaming notebook, first unveiled at CES in January? Well, it's now up on the HP Web site, where it's listed as shipping.

Although it's listed at $2,999, the 20-inch monster (based on the Centrino Duo or "Santa Rosa" platform) actually weighs in at about $4,500 or so, after all the extras are factored in. If you're not into games (and large desks) you might not be interested.

As for that hinge, here's the verdict from Cisco Cheng's review in May: "The verdict is still out on how anyone will transport the HDX9000 on a regular basis. HP is looking into several Chinese briefcase designs; I'd prefer to see one with wheels. You can pivot the screen back and forth and tilt it up and down (though you can't rotate it). The M2010 will let you adjust the height of the screen, but you can't tilt the screen so that it faces the ceiling, for example."

I purchased one of these for $1699 at Comp USA's going out of buisiness sales. I really did not have a lot of time to research this product (things were going fast) but thought it was a good price for what I could see about it on disply in the store. My main interest was the large screen for speadsheet use and that sort of thing. It is heavy for a lap top PC but I don't plan on luging it around like I do my Think Pad. A case is for sure on the agenda for when I do pack it. As far as speed and displayn quality I think it is great. Did'nt notice that it had an HD DVD player which is kinda disappoining now that it looks like Blue Ray is taking over the market. All in all I can't say I'm displeased with my purchase but might have done something differently had I have had more time to resurch. Time will tell.
