RFID at CESI was surprised this morning to read my e-mail and already see a note from the Consumer Electronics Association to register for the 2008 CES. I want to at least enjoy the rest of the summer before registering for this exhausting event! But it looks like Engadget was eager to sign up, because upon registering for a badge, the editors came across an interesting footnote on the CES web site. It reads:

"Please note that an RFID tag will be imbedded in your registration badge and will not contain any personal data but only an identification number. The ID number and their related data collected during CES will be used for internal purposes only by Show Management and will not be sold, bartered or traded."

The swipe ID cards CEA has given us in the past aren't really effective because the vendor booths rarely ever scan our cards at the show. (I think last year maybe like three vendors scanned mine.) So this year, CEA is implementating RFID chips into each badge to track which booths we're visiting and if we're really working. (Umm scary!) You do have the option to check the box next to "I do not wish to have an RFID badge" on the online form at least. I'm not too sure I want CEA knowing where I am during the show, let alone when I need to take bathroom breaks!! It should be interesting how they really use this data once the show comes around next year.
