Can you say "proud sponsor?" We wracked our collective Gearlogian brains and had trouble coming up with an event for which we could possibly be a prouder sponsor. Charitable causes? Meh. Environmental funds? Buh. A bunch of sweaty, costumed, beer-fueled hipster-nerds crammed into a bar, flexing their athletic prowess by swinging a little plastic wand around, mimicking actual physical activity? Bring it on.

This weekend, Gearlog and a handful of our fellow co-sponsors are ridiculously proud to bring Wiimbledon to the hipster-infested shores of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The games are occurring from noon-5pm this Saturday, June 23rd, at our favorite old-school gaming watering hole, Barcade. Wiimbledon consists of one single elimination singles tournament of Wii tennis. The winner of the tournament will receive an unspecified prize, as will the first runner-up. Prizes will also go out for best costume, most athletic, most dangerous, and shortest shorts, according to a release issued by the powers that be.

Signups began yesterday at noon. Entrants can sign up via the official Wiimbledon site. You'll be asked for your name, your team name (note, this is a singles tournament, so team names exist pretty much for the sake of themselves), your e-mail, and your Wii Tennis skill level. Confirmations will be sent to competitors, including game time.

A limited number of folks will be able to enter on game day--though, as Wiimbledon officials have repeatedly reminded us, this thing is likely to get very, very crowded. In which case, rejected entrants will have to console themselves with Barcade's usual selection of beer and vintage arcade machines.

What can we say? Life is rough.

I can see this type of event gaining traction in bars just like pool or darts. :) Good luck with the event, unfortunately there is a great distance between me and Wiimbledon. :(
