Ack. Apologies to Richard Brown at Via, who -- like me -- has been running around like crazy this week. In my haste to publish my story on the new Via NanoBook reference design, I completely left out the fact that Via is introducing a new version of its tiy motherboard line, the Mobile ITX. You might remember the nano ITX and the pico ITX PC motherboards -- this is even smaller, or roughly 7.5 centimeters by 4.5 cm, somewhat smaller than a playing card.

This time around, the Mobile ITX form factor is being pushed at the latest generation of smartphones. According to Richard Brown, Via's vice president of marketing, these will be based on an X86 architecture. Frankly, I have a bit of a hard time believing this, power-management capabilities or not. The cell phone has traditionally been ARM's world, it's hard to believe that's going to change overnight, especially as Intel tried (and failed) to shift the market in that direction. But we'll see what happens.
