Were I ever caught stealing, my top three picks for an arresting officer would be Robocop, Time Cop, and the shapeshifting T1000. A cop on a Segway wouldn't even make my top 20; try explaining that scenario to a 300-pound tattooed man in the cooler. Unfortunately, for three would-be car thieves in Long Beach, NY, the options weren't laid before them.
The Segway-riding officer was patrolling the city when he spotted three juveniles driving a Mercedes, all sporting gloves despite the 80-degree weather outside. After approaching the vehicle to inquire about their peculiar fashion choice, the suspects fled, thus spurring the World's First High-Speed Segway Chase. (Note: the Segway's top speed is 12 mph versus the Mercedes's top speed of about 160 mph.)
Said chase continued for a grand total of 2 blocks, before the Mercedes crashed into a utility pole. The officer apprehended one of the suspects who later confessed, ratting his buddies out in the process. All three suspects were charged with juvenile delinquency; and they now hold the unfortunate title of the World's First Criminals Caught by a Guy on a Segway.
