Okay. We have the iPhone here, and we're doing various things with it. I wanted to fill you in with some first hands-on impressions.

This evening our music and video maven Tim Gideon will be doing most of his testing, and he's less of an avid blogger than I am, so you'l have to wait until tomorrow for his impressions. You'll see our comprehensive iPhone slideshow tonight, though. Tomorrow morning I'll start blogging my test results as I do them, and you're free to add requests. For our rough initial impressions, go to the jump.

  • Okay. Here's the big thing, and feel free to debate it with me. The other guys here are getting giddy like schoolboys at how fun the interface s and how easy it is to READ or RECEIVE information. I'm frustrated by the keyboard and the call quality - in other words by the inefficiency of ENTERING information. This may become a theme.
  • It's very thin, and very solid.
  • Yes, there's a SIM card slot - it's a tray that pops out if you stick a paper clip into a pin hole.
  • The screen smudges VERY easily.
  • The screen image is gorgeous - absolutely crisp.
  • Call quality on the two calls we made was surprisingly poor. There was static in the in-ear feedback, which I've never heard before.
  • It takes a lot of clicks to make a call, but at least it's fun to get there; the interface is like playing a game.
  • Typing on the onscreen keyboard is infuriating. Lots of mistyping at first.
  • Syncing with a Mac was easy and worked well, but remember it syncs with the Apple PIM apps, not Entourage.
  • You can receive calls, but not make calls, while it's syncing.
  • We had trouble connecting to a WPA protected Wi-Fi network, so we turned off WPA and connected fine. We'll have to check that out more thoroughly.
  • Cover Flow is pretty awesome for navigating through albums.
  • The keyboard does NOT rotate into landscape mode when you're entering an address in the address book.
