Today Zap announced plans to develop an affordable high-performance electric vehicle for consumers. The company says the initial concept phase for the new vehicle is complete. The targeted price is $30,000, with top speeds in excess of 100 mph and a range of 100 miles per charge. Much of the technology used in the Zap-X will be used in the new vehicle, but the unnamed new vehicle will ship sooner than the Zap-X.
Currently, Zap sells an electric car and truck design called the XEBRA for about $10,000 that travels speeds up to 40 MPH. Autobloggreenspeculates that the new vehicle will be based on a petrol vehicle already on the market, much in the way that the Zap-X is supposed to be based on the Lotus APX. Based on the company's history and limited resources, Autobloggreen also predicts that the new Zap vehicle will most likely be a three-wheeler. The three-wheel configuration would classify the vehicle as a motorcycle, allowing Zap to avoid difficult and costly federal crash standards. Zap CEO Steve Schneider said more details of the new vehicle will be presented at the annual shareholder meeting on July 29 in Santa Rosa, California.
