As Dan Costa has been editing Tim's and my iPhone review, I've been busy attaching every Bluetooth headset I can find to our iPhone. Want to know what works and what doesn't?

So far my recommendations - strictly in terms of iPhone compatibility - are the BlueAnt V12 headset and the BlueAnt Supertooth Light in-car speakerphone. The V12 had unusually clear connections and transferred caller ID information to its built in screen accurately. The Supertooth, meanwhile, fixed the iPhone's problem of having a too-quiet speakerphone by really pumping up the volume.

For full results with headsets and speakerphones, head to the jump. Check out all of our headset reviews on PCMag.com.

Garmin Nuvi 660 speakerphone/GPS: Pairing OK. Dialing OK. Speakerphone OK. BUT microphone is AWFUL - call sounded horribly noisy and muffled on other end. Also, Nuvi stalled while trying to transfer 1585 contact phone book.

Motorola H800: OK.

Plantronics Voyager 510: OK.

Plantronics Pulsar 590 (in mono mode): OK.

SoundID SM100: OK, but some background hiss.

Blueant V12: OK, and unusually loud and clear! Number, not name caller ID on headset screen.

Blueant Supertooth Light: OK

Motorola H9: OK, but very staticy

Samsung WEP200: OK, and loud

Have you tested any Bluetooth headsets? Add them here.

Howdy...

Just tried this with a bunch of reviewed stuff. Here's what worked:

Apple Hi-Fi - Worked
Harmon Kardon Go+Play - Worked
Klipsch iGroove - Worked
Altec Lansing speakers (3 kinds) - Worked
iSkin Celurian - Works
Pioneer AVIC-D3 Car Stereo - Works..

One more thing about the Pioneer Avic-D3....

iPod funcationality works, and can be controlled through the stereo head unit, but iPod videos DO NOT play. Just audio files. If you try to play a video file, it plays on the iPod and not on the stereo.

Looks like there's no 'video-out' functionality on the iPhone..

Best,

Ben

Works great with the Parrot CK3100 (Hands Free Car Kit). No problems hooking up and the address book transferred over without any intervention from me.

With the iphone interface I can also easily transfer the call to my Bluetooth headset if I am about to get out of the car.

Parrot works much better with the iPhone than my older Blackberry.

How do you get the iPhone to pair successfully with the Garmin Nuvi 660? My two devices "see" each other but then I can't progress beyond that because of the iPhone's keypad and the way it works. Can't type in the passkey. Is there a workaround? Thanks!

Does the iphone work with Jawbone headset?

Posted by: Tom Huff
July 12, 2007 7:59 PM

Did get the motorola H700 to pair. The keys were:
- The usual for getting into pairing mode - hold the button down until the blue/purple light is continuously on, then open the mike arm.
- If the light then goes off or starts blinking, it may mean the battery isn't fully charged. Continuing now results in the failure of the '0000' password to be accepted (looks like the headpiece really drops back out of pairing mode after the mike arm is opened, if it isn't fully charged). So fully charging was the real key.

the jawbone works with the iphone. the only problem that im getting is that after 1-2 hours of inactivity the connection drops. sometimes the jawbone turns off and when i tried to repair agian i have to go through the whole process of the pin # etc. i dunno if its the apple bluetooth or the jawbone. doing further test.

I understand that the iphone's bluetooth is only for headset functionality as of now. But I have a Samsung WEP200 headset which seems to be pairing with iphone but it doesn't connect. When I press the connect in iphone, it still searches for devices but never connects to the headset. I tried to connect it in one of my friend's iphone and it does the samething. The Motorola HS850 DOES WORK. I paired mine with no problem!

A commenter above was wrong. To Bob S. : just because you can't get something to work doesn't mean it doesn't work. Your lack of technical prowess may needlessly cost people money. I'm sure glad I didn't trust you blindly at your word. Be thorough or don't post anything.

The Motorola HS850 does work! However, rather then being smart alec and talking about technical prowess, a short instruction is much more appreciated here:
Put the iPhone into pairing mode (Settings, General, Bluetooth) - Hold the phone butten (middle big one) on the HS850 until the light goes to a steady blue. Then QUICKLY unfold the mike. 0000 > the rest is self explanatory. However, does not seem to work with the iPod portion of the iPhone. Who'd need that anyway.

A note on the Motorola 850... My friend and I each have one and successfully paored and use it. What I had found was that I needed to press the multi-function button FIRT, then dial the number. Dialing the number alone didn't activate the speaker (although it showed it as the audio option.) Hey, whatever works!

A comment for the person who tried to play videos from the iPhone/iPod through the screen, i have the same system in my car, you have to buy a specific Video cable, available in the Camera/Camcorder section of most electronics retailers (i got mine at best buy for about $20) the regular connection does not support video, ask your local installer to tell you which cable they recommend. But i bought a Dynex at best buy, which is the equivalent of buying a store brand item. It works great! Hope that helps.

Also, has anyone had trouble syncing their iPhone via bluetooth to a macbook? I dont know why either one wont find the other. Or a Motorola H500? Same thing happening. Please email me if youve had these problems and figured out why its happening!

My Jabra 250 doesn't work well with iPhone. There is signficiant static, pops and drop-outs even at close (hand-held) range. It did pair with iPhone effortlessly though. I will admit I know little about code or working of a computer, but my adult son does. It is amazing what he has done to his I-phone, the added applications are staggering.

I understand Apple wanted the phone to be exclusive to AT&T however why they are against individuals using the device for its full capabilities. The thing is a small computer in your hand. It would seem in their interest to market the full potential of the device.

March 31, 2008 12:19 PM

Motorola HS850 pairs with iPhone very well. In addition to Sherman's comment on July 23, 2007, users can find the instructions on pages 16 and 17 of the MotoManual that is packaged with the headset. The Motorola web site has the manual: http://tinyurl.com/yqol8f

I think the problem with applying these instructions to the iPhone is that step 2 should be inverted to step 1. It is best to set the iPhone Bluetooth mode on and get ready to pair, then hold down the multifunction button on the headset and begin the wait for the light, boom, and code entry. I think the quickness of opening the boom after the light is on is the key to the iPhone's recognition.

By the way, I just got a new HS850 at buy.com for half of what I paid for it new a year ago at Radio Shack. That might mean an update is coming out, but we needed a second one for a new iPhone in the family and I grabbed one.

I have been quite pleased with the HS850, much better than using the speakerphone on iPhone. I am often told the speakerphone on iPhone has terrible sound quality on the other end of the call.

If you have disconnect problem on your bluetooth devices, usually breaks after about 5 or 10 minutes, The problem should be caused by the iphone power management, which will break the BT connection after the screen turned off. Try to install 'Insomnia' and enable it, your BT headset would be worked perfectly.

Remember enable 'Insomnia' everytime after rebooting your iphone.

Movon MK20 A drawback I have discovered is that incoming calls display the number even though the name is in your phonebook. I have been unable to discover if the Name can be displayed instead.

I have a Garmin 680 and Pairing the iPhone with it ORGINALLY worked with Apple's 1.0 Software, however when they updated the iPhone software to 2.0, the Nuvi will only pair to it, but all functions no longer work. They just show they are linked and will transfer the phone book - thats it. No Dial, no incoming or out going - nada!

The Nuvi 680 originally worked well and had a good microphone and speaker. I called Apple and they said that Garmin would have to update their software to match it.

:(
