Iomega, which is slowly expanding into the services business, announced a pair of hardware products Wednesday: the Iomega 160GB eGo Portable Hard Drive, a USB 2.0 drive based on 2.5-inch drive technology; and the eSATA/USB 2.0 500GB Professional Hard Drive. Unfortunately, save for their cherry-red chassis, there's little to distinguish them from their competitors. They both use EMC's Retrospect software for automated backups, and they use the ubiquitous USB 2.0 connection.

The exception is the 500-Gbyte model, which uses eSATA, the external version of the SATA technology found within PCs. The tech is becoming much more common, now that it's showing up in Intel chipsets.

The 160-GB eGo drive is priced at $159.95, while the 500-GB Professional Hard Drive is priced at $209.95.
