CNNCh7.jpg Before passing judgement, you should ask yourself whether the handful of people waiting in line for the iPhone here in NYC are just plain crazy, or crazy smart. After all, sitting in a lawn chair for days waiting for a $500 phone might not seem like the best thing to do with your week. But thanks to people like, well us, and the ever-desperate 24 hour news cycle, big product launches and the people who camp out for them have become major press events.

And when you're on TV as much as these people are going to be, all sorts of companies want to sponge off your 15 minutes of fame, so there is swag to be had, and deals to be made. When I was there this afternoon, a woman was offering to pay for first-in-liner Greg Packer's iPhone if he would put up a sign for her company behind him. I hope he got something good for wearing that Jack FM shirt too.

And you don't have to be first in line to be mobbed by the press. CNN, ABC 7, and a handful of other outfits are making their way up and down the line this afternoon, talking to all the iPhone squatters. Just what are these people going to do come Friday, when no one cares about them anymore? They'll Prepare for the next big product launch, of course.

First-in-liner Greg Packer is meeting lots of new people. Aside from the press, tourists and onlookers are asking to take pictures with him. And someone even gave him a whole case of those kettle chips he likes.

Even when you're fifth in line for the iPhone, someone with a camera still wants to talk to you.

CNN's Jeanne Moos will interviews the woman forth from the front. Oh, and that refreshing looking lemonade was supplied by Rocketboom.

Has Packer begun to um, well...smell yet?

Not noticeably. He claims that the gym nearby is letting him use their shower. Though I'm not sure how often he gets there, or what would happen if someone tried to take his spot while he's gone.
