Ah, Lego, the preferred building platform for so many clever geeks. Well, add Friedrich Kirschner to that list. He's built a rig that holds his webcam, and a small plastic container. By spooning in milk and taking successive pictures, he gets an effective 3D scan of whatever he places in the container. Considering desktop 3D scanners usually go for well over $2000, this is quite an accomplishment in cheap, clever, low-end tech.
Sure, the contraption could use some improvement, and won't work for every situation, but it seems that Kirschner is listening to suggestions in hopes of improving on the idea. If you have any suggestions for him, let him know. In a blog comment on Instructables.com, he says he's ordering a pool to try out larger-scale scanning. Anyone up for smelling like sour milk for a week or so? Come on, sacrifices must be made for the sake of cheap tech!
