We lost some sleep this week--covering a slew of breaking news and testing devices--which means our latest Gearlog Radio show is chock full of everything important in the tech world. We begin with Palm's release of a device (a laptop? handheld?) called the Foleo. It's supposed to work with your smartphone, but we're not sure why anyone would want to use it. Apple is in the news again with an upgraded version of the AppleTV and why YouTube fans will rejoice. And could we be nearing the end of DRM-protected music? Apple's iTunes Plus service sure comes close. On the second half of the show, we delve into surface computing, more specifically--Microsoft's coffee table-like system with a touch screen. Imagine the back problems you'll have hovering over one! And you'll probably be doing some underwater adventures this summer--snorkeling, swimming, surfing. Make sure you bring along one of these waterproof gadgets. Plus this week's weird gear may be spying on you--at the movies! And for an added bonus, we're introducing a new element to our podcast lineup. But you'll have to listen to Gearlog Radio to find out what it is!

I really like the idea of having a much bigger screen than what's on my Treo. Using this to surf the web and read e-mails would be a lot better than squinting at that small screen. They say it's instant on and instant off, which is nice. The small and light form factor makes it great for use on the train or on a plane etc, places where a full size laptop is too bulky. Sounds like a great concept, and I'm really seriously considering buying one.
The downside? I'm not sure I want one bad enough to pay $500 for it. Cut the price in half and I'm in, but $500? That will take some real convincing. Right now I'm thinking of this as essentially just a big screen and keyboard combo for my Treo. If I'm going to pay $500 for it, there would need to be more than just that.
