Meade-MySky.jpg

Have you ever gazed up at the night sky and wondered exactly what it was you were gazing at? Even here in New York, we catch tantalizing glimpses of mysterious heavenly bodies from time to time. So when associate editor Tony Hoffman and I were invited by Meade Instruments to a real, live demo of its new "handheld Interactive multimedia guide, mySKY," we jumped at the chance.

Of course, the demo had to be held after dark in an unlighted place with some wide-open sky, which is why we found ourselves standing in the middle of a ballfield in Central Park at 9 PM. Thankfully, the nighttime park is populated mostly by dog-walkers these days. The Meade folks set up an impressively professional-looking telescope, then brought out the mySKY. Here's how it works: You point it at a planet, or star, or galaxy that you want to identify, aim as best you can, and press a button. Voila--information about what you're aiming at appears on the device's color LCD; some more important objects even have voice recordings and video that go along with them.

After the jump, find out what makes it work, and how well it worked for us!

So how does this device know what you're pointing at? Built in are a GPS unit, accelerometers, and magnetic north sensors, so it knows where you are and can calculate the mySKY's aim and positioning. It works out of the box, and pretty instantaneously. There are over 30,000 objects in its database, so most of what's visible to the naked eye can be identified. And the mySKY's updateable: It comes with an SD card, so you can pull new info off the Web and add it.

But wait, there's more. Maybe you want to locate a specific object; say, Arcturus. Just find it in the mySKY's database, and the device will show your a real-time sky map with arrows that guide you to the star of choice. Also available are "guided tours" of the night sky, specific to your location and the current date/time. The device is compatible with any Meade telescope; connect them, and you can then locate objects with the mySKY, then view them through the telescope.

On the night of our demo, the air was humid and a bit thick, so visibility wasn't ideal, but we found Venus right away and heard a voiceover about it. After a bit of a wait, more and fainter objects appeared, and I took my turn at pointing and clicking. The mySKY is a bit tricky to aim, but I got the right information about the star I was pointing at--and it was kind of thrilling! We did have a couple misfires, though. I am hoping that with practice and a clearer sky, that won't be as much of an issue.

We'll be able to confirm that theory soon, as Meade will be sending us a final unit once they are available for testing. Look for a hands-on update sometime this month. The mySKY should be available for purchase by the end of June. At $399, it's a bit more costly than a toy. In fact, it's a serious educational device, and at the same time, it's great fun for anyone with astronomical inclinations.

UPDATE from Tony Hoffman: I attended Meade's Central Park MySky demonstration (described in the initial post), which I found impressive, and I had hoped to test and review a MySky for Gearlog. When we finally got a review unit in (one of the first wave of test units, we were told), I took it to our family home in the Catskills for testing. After acquiring our location (it took 2 tries to do this via GPS--it would have been easier to have chosen the nearest city on their list from the menu), I got a message on screen that said that the mySKY needed to adjust its sensors, and to place it on a stable surface. The most stable surfaces around the yard are cinder blocks, and I tried several (because the cinder blocks were stable but not necessarily level), but the sensors would not align within 10 minutes or so. (The text appeared all wavy, as if something was adjusting, but it never went beyond that.).The next night, I procured a surface that was both stable and level--a small, solid wood table--and set it far away from house, car, or anything that could magnetically sway it, but once again I had no luck in getting the sensors to adjust.

After reporting this to Meade, I was told there was a bug in the test unit, and that they were "working round the clock to make sure the next wave of units [were] bug-free." In time, I received a replacement. This one I brought with me on a trip to Michigan, where I'd both hoped to test it myself and let the friend who I was staying and his 9- and 13-year-old kids try it, too. One clear night I took it outside and powered it on. When I went to the introductory video, the audio and video started off fine, but after 10 or 15 seconds the audio faded out and disappeared altogether, though the video continued to play. I tried upping the volume control, but that didn't do anything. Thinking that maybe the batteries had been somehow drained, I tried two other sets of new (Duracell-type) batteries, but although the video played with no problem, I couldn't get the audio to work at all.

I suppose I could have tested the other features, but with something so glaring wrong with it, it didn't seem worth it. (It would be like getting a new PC to test, with a DVD player that didn't work.) We decided not to pursue reviewing MySky any further, not to request yet another review unit. After all that, though, I do think the product has good potential that it failed to live up to in the execution, at least with the two units we were sent. The fact that I think that Meade has a promising product here made the problems I had with it all the more disappointing. I'm glad to see that some people have had better experiences with it (in comments, below)--I can only hope that my problems with it were more of a fluke than the norm.

The mySky sounds like a great advancement in the field of persoanl astronomy. Every school in the nation should have at least one and many individuals should be able to get much satisfication from it. Keep up the great work, I hope Santa brings me one as we can always use it in the dark skys of Colorado; and I can share the experience with my students.

Many star-filled nights,

@Stanley: I stated the cost in the last paragraph; $399.

@Amador: I couldn't agree more! I think the MySKY could be a great way to interest kids in astronomy.

You make the following comment in your article -'device is compatible with any Meade telescope; connect them, and you can then locate objects with the MySKY, then view them through the telescope'. I have an LX10 that was made before GPS was built in. Will this devise give me that same capabiltiy?

Never mind the question about combining MySKY to a non-GPS scope and turning it into a GPS scope. I found the answer and it is YES!!!!

June 19, 2007 1:02 PM

@Gary: This is Meade's response, below; sorry I was unclear! --carol m.

The blog should have read "Any Meade computerized GoTo Telescopes." The mySKY(tm) works with the following Meade telescopes:
-LX200 Classic
-All telescopes that use the Autostar 494, Autostar 497, or Autostar II hand boxes such as DS & DS-2000, ETX, LXD-75, LX90, LX200GPS, LX200R, RCX, and MAX.

Cables are needed to make the connections which are not included with the mySKY. The cable set is sold separately.

Used the skyscout on a desert outing and thought it was cool, but was less than impressed with the limited database and functional layout. Upon returning home I discovered the MySky in the works - exactly how I would have designed it! I pre-ordered immediately and plan on using it with my 10" LX200 classic.

July 3, 2007 11:51 PM

I have a Sky Scout and there are two reasons that I DO NOT like it. They are:
(1) It "powers off" if not continuously used, and then requires GPS starting from scratch again.
(2) It won't work near metal objects such as a telescope.
Does "mySKY" have the same drawbacks? If not, then I will buy one. Please answer. T. Drouet

Where can I find additional information on how mySky works with Meade scopes. I have an ETX-90EC and would seriously consider purchasing mySky, but need to know more about how they work together. I checked the Meade website, but didn't find anything. Also was wondering if you had more specific information on when it might be available.
Thanks

Since I am not an astronomer, the scope is not much fun for me to use without the starfinder feature. Any guarantee that the MySky will work with my ETX? If so, I will definitly order one.

Hi all: I'm very glad you found my post and are so interested! But it's probably going to be more useful if you direct your questions about which telescopes you can use with the MYsky, the product's availability, etc., to Meade itself. Here's a link to its Contact Us page.

Here's some good news: We got one in for testing, and will be posting a review very soon!

Well, mySky's are shipping. Focus Scientific just received their first batch of mySKY's today. I'm testing the first one :)

So far, I'm impressed with the device; wish the screen updates were faster, and the sensor adjustment phase seems to work better indoors than outdoors. The instructions say you should be 10 yards away from buildings, cars, hydro wires, and anything else that can interfere with the sensors; that may be the problem I'm having; I will re-test in the park down the street.

It's cool. The form factor is a little disturbing; I wonder how the police will like it :)

I think I prefer the Celestron Sky Scout over this for overall construction, and speed. Both the mySKY and the Sky Scout are totally awesome products, and should help fast-track people's knowledge of the sky. I give it an 8 out of 10 on the WOW scale.

> It's cool. The form factor is a little disturbing; I wonder how the police will like it :)

That's a serious problem -- the device should at least be made orange or green like a kid's toy gun or the form changed to something like binoculars or a camera with handgrip or a telescope.

You'll notice there are NO gun-shaped toys available nowadays in silver or black. There's a good reason for this. Someone at Mead should understand this is a real problem.

I just received my MySky, turned it on, and found that it did not work. I aimed at Cygnus and it claimed I was looking at Lynx. I was on a high school football field. I tried entering my location via GPS and manually and received the same results. I did pick it up a few times while it was in GPS mode. I am going to give it another try tonight. I was wondering if anyone else had a bad experience with this or can make suggestions.

I tried it again this evening (Sat. 9/29/07). I figured I'd take a last shot before sending it back. For those who know very little of the sky, I think it would be great. I was amazed with the videos but had a hard time figuring out where the exact spot it was pointing to. I would suggest purchasing it from a company that would take it back if you don't like it. I think it would be much better if you could put it on a tripod. I think my error was not holding it while pointing it to the sky. I'll play around with it tomorrow and see what happens. The verdict is still out for me since I have a "go to" scope which comes with lots of info. If anyone has this product but hasn't posted please do so. All information you can give on this new product I'm sure would be valuable to everyone!
Thank you-stevenseigel@hotmail.com

I finally got the Meade MySky working. Here is what I found out: 1. Do not put the MySky on the ground pointing up-it can not get a read from the satellites that way. 2. The Sun is not programmed into the MySky. 3. Use good high numbered rechargeable batteries-I 've had the MySky on for at least 45 minutes to an hour off an on and the battery indicator is still has not reached the halfway point. 4. There are indicator lines when you first point it up-those white lines are the satellites communicating with the device. 5. You can use this as a toy or you can use it for more sophisticated purposes-for example, when it's cloudy out, you can lay back and figure out where things are located so when the time comes to use your scope, you will have a better understanding of the sky. 6. According to Meade technical support, you can hook up small speakers so that a small group can listen to the audio. 7. The software that comes with it may have a techinical issue with the lunar software. If it does not load properly, call Meade tech support and they will send you a separate moon CD to install. Any questions or concerns, contact Meade. I think this instrument is worth the investment for those really interested in the sky. There are no subsitutes for a good sky atlas and planisphere for the serious minded.

I have a new MySky and although it was cloudy last night when I tried it, it seems to work pretty much as advertised. I could only see Arcturus through the cloud cover. Aiming via the GoTo command is a bit spastic but I believe it can be mastered. One thing important, use the Light Balance function to dim down the sight's illumination, otherwise blinding. And it looks like the battery state is a factor at low light levels (as battery goes down, sight lights may dim out.

I tried to update using supplied software. It looked like it was programming the SD module but wrote nothing, just hung with one empty bar on status line. Would like to email question to Meade but for some inexplicable reason does not seem to offer an email product support. I backed up the SD to disk just in case it got erased or scrambled.

I think this product is as close to the technology cutting edge as it could be. However, I believe the display needs more resolution. I'm amazed it actually works. One last thing, I bent back the negative battery contact on the lower right hand cell when I tried to insert it. Bent it back and was more careful. Seems to be OK now.

I've been waiting since June and I'm glad I did! This mySKY is a beautiful tool. I made sure that I set it down away from any metal bearing objects, including concrete, and it calibrated itself in about 4 minutes. I was extremely pleased to find that it was "dead on" from the very start. Anyone that is familure with aiming a firearm will have no problem. It's just like aiming a gun. After verifying that it worked I tried updating the unit, it was as easy as 123. Just follow the on screen instructions, and have a little patience because it's not fast.
The only thing I wasn't pleased with was the lack of an interface cable. I understand that it can interface with any number of Telescopes so it's not practical to include one. I have an LX200 and I'd like to use it right away. I applude the fact that you will send me one free by completeing the request but 12 to 14 weeks is a long time to wait.
Overall I'm extremely pleased with the unit and, in response to one of the earlier comments, the reason for not having a big users manual is obvious the first time you turn it on, You don't need one!
Thanks Meade

I worked with a group from a town last night. There were no stars because of the clouds. Instead of disappointing the crowd, I hooked up computer speakers to the MySky and plugged the speakers into an inverter which was plugged into a Celestron Battery. It worked out great!! I had the kids stand in a line and one at a time they pointed it to to the sky and I played back the audio. Next week is the cloud/rain date. Hopefully there will be clear skies.

Overall, very pleased with MySky, although I have found some inaccuracies. When used in the UK, pointing at stars clearly in Gemini (Pollux and Castor) reveals stars in Orion. Also, when pointing at Mars, which is very prominent in Gemini at the moment, yields Bellatrix (in Orion)- miles away! Has anybody else encountered this? Using the GoTo facility for Mars suggests that the planet is in quite a different position from where it actually is. The other planets can all be located acurately.

I received mySKY for my birthday the day after Thanksgiving, and, overall, it is pretty cool. It correctly identified Aldebaran, Castor, Pollux, Sirius, Procyon and Polaris, as well as Saturn and Mars. I even used it to find Venus during the day - good stuff!
That said, however, some peculiarities and complaints:
1. It can't identify, or properly locate, Capella.(!)
2. Came with version 1.2q, Calibration 4, firmware. I upgraded, and appears to be no change.
3. Poor earphones
4. A $400 tool that is delivered without some starter AA batteries - what the...
5. Seems like the 256MB SD card doesn't leave much room for growth or future updates.

All that said, overall, not bad for one of the first versions of this device on the market. I look forward to future sofware updates to fix the problems I haven't yet blundered into.

After a several months wait, I received the MySky with delight. The set-up calibration was fine, and it is easy enough to use. But after a few gentle sessions, the "on-off" button stopped working. The seller, OPTCORP.com was good about replacement, although it took several weeks. Now, after using it, (gently), a few times, the "on-off" switch has again ceased to function. We are in the process of contacting the seller again, but do I really want a third device if the problem has not been addressed? Has anyone else had this experience?
