ThinkGeek, purveyor of geek gear and enemy of my wallet, has struck again--with a vengeance. Just look at that LED Art Fan: retro art-deco styling meshed with customizable animated LED-goodness. Even at a hefty $349, I could pretend to justify the purchase by telling myself that the wow factor would cut down on my Air Conditioner abuse during these hellishly humid New York summers.
But then there's the catch; there's always a catch. It seems the retro-styling poured into the fan's design seems to have spilled over into the storage and interface. The 5MB of storage may be enough to hold the blinking "Brazil" logo I so want to put on this thing. But the included IR transmitter used to get the animations up and running requires a serial port--and Windows.
When a site like Think Geek has to tell its readers, "As highly programmable as this fan is, you don't want to miss a step," you know the process is complicated. Something this cool just begs for a USB connection, or even Wi-Fi.
