bittorrent.JPG BitTorrent said Monday that is partnering with Buffalo Technology to add hardware support for its "torrent" technology in its upcoming routers. The company also announced a software development kit (SDK) to encourage third-party development.

Buffalo will join Planex, ASUS, and QNAP as BitTorrent hardware partners. What this means is that devices from all of these different manufacturers will be able to download BitTorrent torrents without the oversight of a PC. Torrents, as you might recall, can be used for many purposes: to download a free Linux distribution, or a copyrighted movie. In essence, it's a tool like fire, which can light a room, or burn down a house. In both cases, however, they require storage -- and Buffalo, as a NAS provider, can benefit from this.

Pricing, ship dates, product details, etc., were not announced.
