It's been well over a year since I first heard of Ugobe's super-cute answer to the world's personal robot needs. Since then, I've seen Ugobe's Pleo robotics dinosaur in person and been charmed by its smiling face and lifelike motion. I've also met with Pleo's creative (and obsessive) father Caleb Chung. Chung, who also developed the Furby thinks and rethinks every tiny detail of the electronic companion--which may account for how long it's taking to get to market.
Now, however, that, obsession appears to be paying off. In a recent letter to Pleo "Family and Friends" Chung announced that, counter to original plans, Pleo will feature a replaceable battery. This is good news for robot fans who were concerned that the rechargeable Pleo would have to leave home for repairs when its battery died out.
Chung also gave a glimpse of Pleo's packaging, which appears to have shifted from an ominous black to a more welcoming, friendly green (hey, isn't everything "going green" these days?).
Still no word on exactly when Chung and company will finally ship the bot, but Chung does note that family and friends should "stay tuned to their e-mail box next month" for word on an exclusive opportunity.
UPDATE: Ugobe forwarded along this much cleaner shot of Pleo's green box.

I want this more than the PS3. Looks totally amazing and I've started saving my money.
