Scientific Atlanta announced a partnership with Macrovision this morning. No, it's not about content protection, although that's instantly what people think of when they hear the Macrovision name.
No, this was a partnership between Mediabolic, the weird little acquisition Macrovision made this past January. I always see Mediabolic and Macrovision together and think to myself: "Mediabolic wants to be cool. They want to connect consumer devices. What are they doing with these people?" It's like the hip stylish chick dating the math major. You wonder.
The deal with Macrovision makes sense, though. Macrovision protects content; Mediabolic extends that content to other devices.
By partnering with Scientific Atlanta, which makes set-top boxes for cable companies and other carriers, the content that comes in through the set-top box can be protected, and then sent to other devices. That makes Hollywood happy, and when Hollywood's happy, it means that we can finally add the channel that we've all been waiting for: "The Grass Channel." "Watch it grow, and wait to die. The Grass Channel." Because we have everything else already.
