Samsung continues to expand its microSD memory card capacities and announced today that it has developed an 8-Gbyte card for multimedia mobile phones and digital cameras.
The memory card is capable of storing 2,000 MP3 music files, 4,000 digital photos, or approximately 5 DVD-quality movies, according to Samsung; the cards also have read/write speeds of 16-Mbytes/s and 6-Mbytes/s, respectively.
That's not nearly as fast as the new SQ flash cards that Xmultiple Technologies released (32-Mbytes/s and 22-Mbytes/s) last week, but enough to exceed the Speed Class SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) standard which requires a data write speed of 4-Mbytes/s.
As Samsung notes, MicroSD cards, which are a quarter the size of an SD card, are backward compatible with their bigger SD card brethren by using an extender. No word yet on pricing or availability from the company.
