We've already seen a number of approaches to increasing road safety through technology: Here's one that wants to use the Web. RoadSupervisors.net is developing what it calls a "radical and innovative concept which could significantly reduce the current level of road accidents by utilizing the power of the Internet." The proposed system would identify risky drivers and disseminate information to systematically rectify problematic driving behaviors. But RoadSupervisors.net hopes to compel governments to use technology to empower drivers instead of just as a more efficient way to monitor and punish them.
The system is more or less a modern day version of "How's My Driving?": A motorist who sees an offense can take down the details and phone in a report. RoadSupervisors.net would allow registered users to fill in detail online reports about problem drivers, which are then sent to a central database for processing.
RoadSupervisors.net says it has been developing a whole range of strategies based on motivation, deterrents, targeted education, social pressure, enforcement and punishment all aimed at curbing risky driving habits. The promotional phase of this concept is now being launched as part of an online, interactive project at Roadsupervisors.net where any interested parties are invited to offer their comments, opinions and ideas.
