owc.JPG Other World Computing announced on Tuesday a quad-interface terabyte external drive, including an external SATA interface.

The four interfaces include FireWire 800, FireWire 400, USB 2.0, and eSATA ports. eSATA, the external version of the SATA connection used in PCs, is the fastest interface of the four.

The OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro joins a few other SATA drives, including the LaCie "Two Big" and the Seagate eSATA Pushbutton Hard Drive, among others. To date, however, those drives have either lacked the flexibility of multiple interfaces or the terabyte capacity point.

OWC's drive is priced at $599. The company also will sell the wquad-interface version across a number of other capacity points, including 250 Gbytes ($169.99), 300 Gbytes ($189.99), 320 Gbytes ($209.99) , 400 Gbytes ($219.99), and 500 Gbytes ($259.99). A 750-Gbyte version will be priced at $399.99, the company said.

Each drive includes a 16-Mbyte cache and spins at 7,200 RPM, save for the terabyte option, which includes a 32-Mbyte buffer, OWC said.

The drives can be purchased at OWC's Web site or at other e-tailers, the company said.
