Nokia announced late last week that they're doing their part to help the environment and decrease energy consumption by making their cell phones (and by extension, cell phone users) more energy conscious. When you leave your phone plugged into the wall overnight, your phone continues to draw power even after the battery is entirely charged. That power adds up. According to Nokia, it's enough wattage to power 85,000 homes per year.
To help return some of that power to the grid and decrease our overall energy consumption, Nokia will outfit its cellphones with audible alerts that ask you to disconnect them from line power when the battery is charged. The new alerts will prompt you to disconnect the charger when the phone's battery is fully charged, increasing the life of the battery, saving energy, and lowering your electricity costs.
The new alerts will appear first on Nokia's 1200, 1208, and 1650 models, which are popular in European markets, as well as markets in India, China, and Latin America. Nokia plans to roll out the technology to all of its phones, but has not commented specifically on any release of the technology in North American markets.
