Despite the fact that the Wii is still facing issues meeting consumer demand, the sales gap between Nintendo's hot "can-do" system and Sony's "can't do it so well" gaming console, also known as the PlayStation 3, has widened during April. The New York Times is reporting that Americans bought 360,000 Wii consoles, which is roughly four times more than the 82,000 PS3s sold within the same time. NPD Group, which compiles monthly sales data, also noted that Microsoft sold 174,000 of its Xbox 360 consoles, which is more than double of the new Sony system, for those of you keeping track at home. But it should be added that Sony actually had the second-best-selling game console in April with the PS2, which had sales of 194,000 units, making for a total of 38 million since it was released in October 2000.
It is still anyone's game with the current generation of consoles. To date the Nintendo Wii has sold 2.5 million units compared with 1.3 million PS3s, while 5.4 million Xbox 360s have been sold since November of 2005.

Anybody's game? Those sales figures are for the United States. Worldwide, Nintendo is doing even better. Weekly sales of Wii in Japan are between 6 and 8 times those of PS3 and 24 to 32 times sales of Xbox 360. Nintendo also leads in Europe and Australia.
Nintendo has sold more than 7 million units in less than six months, with availability so limited I have not seen one on store shelves since I bought mine on launch day. (Having preordered four months in advance.)
With unique third party software trending the way it is, Sony doesn't have a chance in h-e-l-l of catching up. (Possibly not even with Microsoft.)

hahahaha,
Jed, you are a bit ridiculous. Nintendo is all about the buzz. There is no real reason for this system to hold the lead too long. It is a weak system.
Mark my word. PS3 will turn tables rather soon. Wait til the real games march in. June will be a killer month w/ the likes of Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Games like these will cause people to buy systems. Nintendo has no real games - only cute has beens..

hahahaha,
dave, you obviously live in some delusional fantasy land. in something i like to call "the real world," nintendo is basically raping the PS3 and pretty much everything else in its path. i'm sure the the wii is "weak" just like the DS lite is weak. and look how badly the uber-powerful PSP wrecked it. oops. things didn't really turn out that way, did it? PS3 is pretty much in a death spiral... low install base --> developers jump ship on exclusivity --> no compelling reason to buy ---> repeat. no one except the hardest of the hardcore is gonna drop $700 - $800 on a console before they can play a single game -- ninja gaiden or not. let's face it: PS3 is gonna be collecting dust on store shelves until MGS4, FF, etc. appear... and by then, it may be too little too late.

oh and that cute has been for the ds, known as pokemon pearl and diamond, is not a real game. and it didn't cause people to buy systems. even though the game sold 1.75 million copies in two weeks. and propelled the DS to close to half a million console sales in one month. i can only hope the wii will see some similar non-real games in the future. like metroid, smash bros, mario galaxy, and so on.

dave ,
I hate to break this to you but the only people who buy $600 gaming consoles for _A_ game, or even a handful of games, are hardcore gamers and said hardcore gamers have already dropped their half grand on the PS3 when it launched.
What is left are casual gamers and guess which console they are buying, or trying to buy?
The only thing that Sony can hope for in the short term is a drop in price on BR drives and cell processors so they can get the PS3 within the realm of grossly expensive instead of ridiculously expensive.

The Wii is appealing. Thinking it is going to die is very short sighted.
I'll give an anecdote. I am in my early thirties and have not owned a gaming system in about 10 years. My wife has never owned one. We saw my nephews playing one at Christmas time and decided to buy one. Now we have a Wii and about 10 games. We probably play for about two hours a week. Hardcore? Not at all, but we are still enjoying it after having it for about 4 months.
So, we talk to friends and family. We tell them how great it is. My brother ended up buying one for his family after talking to us. They don't buy gaming systems often, and I just can't see them buying another system for many years. My wife was speaking to her nephew who is a bit more into gaming. He will have to save up his money to buy a system. He is torn between a Wii and a XBox 360. After discussing it with my wife, it sounds like he is leaning towards buying a Wii. If NHL 2K7 was available on the Wii, it wouldn't even be a question for him.
It is just anecdotal evidence, but any time I speak to anyone about gaming machines, it is very rare that they are considering anything other than a Wii. Granted, I don't really know too many hardcore gamers. However, I can name about six friends that have a Wii, another handful of people that are looking for one, but I don't know anyone that is really interested in buying one of the competitors. Most of the people that I am talking about would not spend the money on a second system.
There is no doubt in my mind that the technology behind Sony or MSFT is better, especially around sound an graphics. However, the same can be said about Betamax when comparing to VHS. The best technology does not always win. Consumers did not feel that the better technology was worth the higher price when looking at VCRs. When you factor in that Wii has an advantage in the wider appeal to non-traditional gaming markets, you have domination in the making.

James has some really good points. And .... I would have to say that I've had similar experiences with my family and friends. The best tech does't always win. Price/user friendlines/fun will beat better tech any day.
By the way, this reply was done on a Wii in only a minute or 2. I find myself using the Wii for more than just games..... just paid my car insurance via the wii, and read both my home and work emails.

Dave is an idiot.
The biggest difference between the Wii and PS3 is not just the gaming processors (which is obviously dominated by PS3) but also the market (which is obviously dominated by the Wii). While PS3 thinks that it can win by focusing on the tiny fraction of hardcore gamers that have to feed their addiction by spending multi-hundreds of dollars to have fun, the Wii has won because they have been focusing on bringing the rest of the people in the world to have fun. Let's say hardcore gamers make up 20% of the whole US population. Dave, 80% is much bigger than 20%. Sony has miscalculated gravely, and the Wii will be spanking their competitors for a long time. Furthermore, I have no doubt that Sony and Microsoft (if they haven't decided to jump ship) will be copying the innovation of the Wii for their next generation console. The truth hurts, Dave, doesn't it? Go get a Wii, relax, and have fun...

yeah dave, I think I hate you> I don't like the wii or the ps3 or the xbox for the matrer but you are speaking nonsense.
