If you weigh less than 88 pounds, can collect 330 pounds of dirt in under 30 minutes and are an, um, autonomous robot, you could win NASA's Regolith Challenge.
Actually you could still win if you can build the robot that can shovel that much "lunar dirt" (also known as Regolith) in the pre-described time. According to a report on Space.com tomorrow's challenge is not all fun and games. NASA is now dead serious about returning to our Lunar cousin and establishing a permanent base camp. Such a camp would require more heavy-duty construction activity that has even been attempted before on the orbiting rock.
Standing in for the lunar surface in Saturday's competition, will be Santa Maria Fairpark in Santa Maria, CA. Each team will have 10 minutes to set up the robot and then it's on its own. Space.com notes that one team has created a conveyor belt system. I can't wait to see some of the YouTube videos from these competitions.
The Regolith competition is offering three cash prizes: $150,000 for first place, $75,000 for second and $50K for third.
