Just two weeks after Buffalo Technology introduced a 3-Tbyte version of its network-attached storage devices, LaCie today announced its own 2-Tbyte Ethernet Big Disk model.
As with the drive's 1-Tbyte cousin, the new 2-Tbyte version comes in the same compact 2" x 7" x 11" form factor and will support Windows, Mac OS and Linux, according to LaCie. The drive also features a Gigabit Ethernet connection and 2 USB ports so customers can boost storage capacities even more by adding additional drives.
While not quite matching the capacity of Buffalo's new NAS devices, LaCie's 2-Tbyte Ethernet Big Disk does have a slightly better price point at $1,099. Yes, that's still a lot of clams, but it's less that the $2,500 you'll be shelling out for Buffalo's TeraStation Live and the TeraStation Pro II.
For home users, the LaCie Ethernet Big Disk also offers fast data transfer rates on the network and can stream multimedia content to UPnP-compatible AV adapters. Families can then simultaneously listen to stored music and play movies on a networked theater system in the living room.
LaCie says it is currently taking pre-orders for the 2-Tbyte Ethernet Big Disk and is estimating it will ship by mid-June. The 1-Tbyte model is currently available pretty much everywhere.
