I had my hands on an XPS 700 not too long ago, and those guys are heavy. Seriously--the cases are bigger than they look in the photos, and the box has that logo on it that implies two people should lift it at any one time. That's actually right; the case stands tall and weighs a ton. Even so, it packs a lot of horsepower under the hood, and a lot of cooling to match. Dell has finally taken the veil off of its new Dell XPS 720 line of high-end gaming desktops, and the specs are impressive.
Each of the new desktops will come with 2GB of Corsair Dominator EPP RAM standard (actually a downgrade from the 4GB max of the 710, but faster RAM overall), an Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme QX6800 quad-core CPU that can be factory overclocked to 3.7GHz, an NVidia Nforce 680i SLI motherboard, and a pair of NVidia GeForce 8800 Ultra video cards. They'll run about $6,000 with Dell's 24-inch widescreen 2407 FPW LCD, so all that power will cost you. Even so, Dell is known to offer sale prices and discounts often, so you might be able to find a deal.
Now that Alienware is officially a division of Dell, it's applied some Alienware-style fun to the XPS 720: The case lighting is software-controlled and can be programmed to light up in certain ways to add atmosphere to gaming, or set to strobe, cross-fade, or chase depending on the need. What that means remains to be seen, but it's definitely sounding cool. The XPS 720 is available now in the US and Canada.
