Helio OceanOkay. I've had the Helio Ocean for a few days now, written a longer-than-usual review and talked to Helio a few times about their butt-kicking, Sidekick-smooshing messaging device. Now it's your turn: what do you want to know? Ask me and I'll do my best to answer. I'll monitor this thread for at least two weeks - so, let's say, through June 1 - but hopefully after then, other Ocean owners on board will also be helping with answers.

Keep an eye out for my Ocean review on PCMag.com, which should be posting soon.

There's a video floating around of the Ocean's ringers, but they're all musical. Are there any plain old ring-type ringers included?

Has Helio given you any idea when Exchange support might be enabled, or what they're planning to charge. Posters on HoFo indicate CSRs are telling folks it'll be $9.95 a month.

Any way you could contact helio for an answer on when Exchange support might be enabled, and if they are going to charge for it?
Every one would really like to know this

Wow, questions already.

I like it quite a lot. Check my review tomorrow.

There are 15 ringers and they're all tunes. No "plain" ringers.

Exchange is coming "soon." It's always been described as free to me, but since I saw those rumors, I'm double checking and I'll post here again when I hear back for sure.

here are some q's :)

1. which of the email providers is "push" like? or do you have to click an option to check email? my BB Pearl gets push from Gmail and Yahoo instantly so hoping same applies on the Ocean.
2. how are the speakers when playing music? best i have heard so far is on the Nokia Xpress. Loud without sound too tinny or distorted.
3. does the email client let you attach pics housed on media card/internal memory to an email? or are you forced to send as MMS?

thanks!! :)

What about synchronization between a local standalone Outlook client (for Contacts at least, Notes would be a nice bonus)? Helio has a downloadable "PCLink Pro" for their other phones to keep desktop and phone contacts in sync, but apparently Ocean users only get a 1-way manual transfer (by CSV file of contacts up to their Helio account where they then make it to the phone)? Can this be right?

Posted by: Sascha Segan
May 14, 2007 11:09 PM

Occam, for now, yes, you're right. Outlook syncing is a problem. Helio says that's one of the "coming soon" features.

Diego, you get push from Yahoo!, MSN and AOL, but not GMail. For other accounts, you must manually click "send/receive" to get new mail. I have never heard a phone that in my mind has tolerable speakers for music, and the Ocean's are just as tinny as the rest of them. And yes, the email client allows you to attach pictures.

Can you install 3rd party apps?
I'm most concerned about
1 - an e-book reader (Microsoft or otherwise)
2 - a divx/xvid movie player like TCPMP

Or does the Ocean take care of this on it's own?

May 15, 2007 12:41 PM

Have you tried Google Calendar on it? How about the actual gmail website (instead of using their software?)

Posted by: Sascha Segan
May 15, 2007 4:55 PM

Deltron, you can only install third party apps sold or provided by Helio. Right now there are a few, but neither of the ones you're suggesting. The Ocean CAN play movies encoded as 3GPP, though.

I haven't tried Google Calendar ... and why on earth would you want to go through a webmail Web site when you could tap into the account directly? Seriously, that's a serious question.

Review will be up tomorrow, I think.

Question: When you close the phone it flicks 'off' after just a few seconds if you are the main screen. Anyway to have it not flick off? and not show a black screen when the phone is on.

it would be great if if there was an analog clock or something of the like.

Also - is there a site to go to for MAC syncing?

lastly, if i have mpeg-4 that i took with a digital camera can it play on the ocean? i tried it but although i moved it to the video file, it does not show up on the phone. again, this is a mac.

thanks.

For all the reasons I love gmail... search, labels, etc... and the Google Talk chat built in, since they don't support it.

But on the Calendar side, seem to have stumped you on that one. I'll just wait to get my hands on one I guess.

Hi, Sasha. I was wondering if there are easy ways to get Photos and Videos off of the Ocean via USB. It turns out that this is no problem if you set your camera to save to your external (i.e. MicroSD) memory. However, I didn't know this and took a lot of vids and photos last weekend to internal memory. Mass Storage mode doesn't seem to give me access to them. I can't email the videos, either, since I set them to higher resolution, and these cannot be attached to emails.

On another note, I found that there are some problems with CSV export from a Mac. I worked through them, though, and have successfully exported my contacts to my phone from Mac OS X. I took some notes that will hopefully be useful:

How's the battery life?

How thick is it? Pocket size?

How is the gmail interface? is it just the web app that google made or is it some sort of home brewed app?

Some screenshots of the quicksearch would be great. I love the idea of whiping this out to look stuff up on wikipedia in the middle of arguments.

Thanks.

Scotty G-
1.)So far from what i've seen you can only change the back-light duration when the phone is open. I'm sure this is done to save battery life, which is a good thing.

2.) Sorry I no nothing about macs, im not a mac user.

3.) your video has to be converted to a certain format in order for it to play on the Ocean. There are free converters all over the internet google is your friend. I use Total Video Converter but I don't remember if its free or not. COnvert the file to these settings-
- File Format: .3g2 or .3gp

- Video Codec: MPEG-4

- Video Size: 176x144

- Audio Codec: AAC

- Total Bitrate: 256kbps or lower

- Frame Rate: 12 frames per second or lower

- Ensure that the encoded file uses the .3gp or .3g2 extension.

Hope this helps

This is a link to Oceans driver for syncing the ocean and the pc. This should make the PC recognize the ocean as a media player and open with auto play or show up as a media player drive in MyComputer.

I have downloaded the Pantech Curitel Service Software and installed the drivers therein, but though my PC recognizes the device when connected via USB, it does not display a removable drive for it, and thus is inaccessible. I gather that this issue may be that the Ocean itself isn't recognizing the connection (?). Any input would be deeply welcomed!

I didn't really see an answer to the part of Eric's question that intrigues me: videos I make with my Helio; how do I play them on my PC? Transferring them is easy (my PC has a microsd reader) but all of the popular players (qtime, windows media player, etc.) give me an error when trying to play the .mp4 files.

Anyone who has installed the software and their phone doesn't show up after you plug it into the usb cable, you may need to access the menu on your phone while it's plugged in and select "Mass Storage Mode". It will remember after you select it once, but it was not in this mode the first time I plugged mine in and I had to select it before the phone would show up as a drive.

Can I transfer images from pc to phone anyway?

Is there anyway to sync the @myhelio.com webmail contacts (I uploaded a csv) to the actual phone itself?

Heck just to verify this, it seems like I can't add any pop3 accounts unless I sign up for the "MS Exchange" 10 bucks a month thing - is that true??

ben you have to change your 'ringtone' to .mmf. in order to see the full name of the file with extension and all you gotta go to the control panel and under folder options select the one that allows you to view the extension after that just change it to .mmf like i said and email it to yerself. there's a couple of underground websites that already have converted videos so it takes the pain on the whole renaming thing, google is INDEED your friend mate.

Jamie:
i wanna know the exactly same thing. im still trying to figure out how to make your own video ringtones.

Hello, I heard you could get an attachment to connect your PC to your Ocean (or maybe drift) and get internet through the phone.

Posted by: Ted
December 29, 2007 1:05 PM

Hey everybody i found out if you have quicktime pro, for mac or windows, you can export any full length movie to 3gp or 3gpp. You might need to find and install codecs, but if quicktime can open it then it can convert it. You just have to input the specs Johan W. posted:

- File Format: .3g2 or .3gp

- Video Codec: MPEG-4

- Video Size: 176x144

- Audio Codec: AAC

- Total Bitrate: 256kbps or lower

- Frame Rate: 12 frames per second or lower

- Ensure that the encoded file uses the .3gp or .3g2 extension.

follow these directions:

1. Open your video file with quicktime pro. (dont play it)

2. With the file open, goto file tab > export. here you can change the name of the file name and its destination directory. Once your done with that, click on the drop down menu next to export. You should get a list of various conversion methods. Choose "movie to 3g".

3. Goto "USE" drop down and select 3gpp.

4. Next click on options. input the specs info provided by Johan W. (quicktime on mac will automatically tell you if the input specs are not compatible with mobile standard, just in case you make an error)

5. You can decide whether or not to keep the aspect ratio through letterbox or crop.

6. Close the options window and click save. The process time depends on cpu speed and file length. So far, I have converted avi(divx), mp4,and mpeg2. All files work on Helio Ocean. Mac has Helio support built in (unwittingly), now to try audio for ringtones..I will keep you all updated.

Please help. I have had my ocean for several months and it's great other than HIDEOUS distortion that occurs on all of my incoming calls. It's only a short blurp of distortion that lasts less than a second but it's right with the caller is saying there name. Obviously this is annoying. I have gone through all the trouble shooting with customer care and they have sent me 3 different oceans. They all do the same thing. Helio tech support didn't have an answer when I called with this question: How can I use photos from my External Memory to send via email or a text message? Just in case you guys were wondering, watching movies on your Helio Ocean works BEST if you put the actual video file on your INTERNAL MEMORY, NOT EXTERNAL. You will need the Ocean-to-PC cable to do this, but don't worry because the process is VERY EASY TO DO. The cable comes with the phone. All you do is:

Plug the two together, wait for your PC to detect the Ocean's drive from "My Computer", then:

Movies -> paste your video file (which should be either 3G2 or 3GP) here, then go on your Ocean and select "exit".

and VOILA!

I've had this thing for a year and a half now. Loved it at first. Then it starting acting up. As of right now...

The screen is just when I open it. And if I'm super lucky the screen will pop on for a moment, but only if I open it vertically. And when I try to access certain menus or my photo albums, frozen.

I can't answer calls in a normal fashion because the smaller, internal speaker just decided to not work anymore. The only way I can answer a call is by opening the phone horizontally and using speakerphone. Problem is... the screen doesn't work, so I have no idea who's calling.

And finally... I think it erased the stuff I had on the Micro SD card as well.

This phone's given me a whooole bunch of problem in the last week. Yeah... this all pretty much happened at once.

My Ocean has been on a downward spiral for the last month. The buttons on the front started sticking first, and now two of them don't work at all. My screen has been acting up - going black whenever I switched orientations, freezing, etc., in the last two days it has reached critical status. It only turns on when I power on the phone, as soon as it goes to 'sleep' it's gone for good. I give up, my new moto q9c will be here in 2 days. I just hope I am able to get my contacts and what pics it didn't mysteriously delete off first. Bye Helio, it was nice while it lasted...

I'm kind of upset that the Ocean is inferior to the mysto in terms of FPS. A movie on my Ocean HAS to be 10fps while the mysto will play quite nicely at 14fps. What the fark? Audio syncing is next to impossible on the Ocean. Blah...

Hey mate. I have a very stressful problem relating to my Helio Ocean device. I accidently dropped it about 1 1/2 feet high, and the screen went like red for a bit, with many thin lines through the screen, then.. my background has a light blue blodge in the middle. the weird and confusing thing is EVERYTHING is backwards. All the writting. The menu, my text messages, even pictures.
I was wondering what caused this to happen, and HOW to fix it.
Also, when I go to menu, or anything, the background is all light blue.

HOPEFULLY you can give me some adivce. Any is much appreciated.

-Thank you

Done with Helio. First one crashed. Replacement crashed in 2 months. Ever since Virgin purchased them, service really sucks. All previous helio links redirect to Virgin.
Guess it's time to follow the masses to iPhone.
