DPReview.com, which operates out of London and is one of the most respected and comprehensive digital camera review websites, has been acquired by Amazon.com. Founded in 1998 by Phil Askey, the site generally features incredibly deep, in-depth review on everything from the camera's image quality to menu systems. According to several sources, the monthly traffic for the site is 120 million pages in over 22 million sessions. But even more importantly, it's a site that both camera industry insiders and consumers alike have looked to as an authoritative voice in digital cameras.
According to the press release, which appears on DPReview's site, "Dpreview.com is by far the most authoritative source anywhere for straight talk about new digital cameras," said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. "We at Amazon.com have been their fans for a long time, and we extend a big welcome to the dpreview.com team." In the release, Askey indicates that the site will use Amazon's resources to expand such features as forums while still maintaining the in-depth content the site presently publishes.

Dang! Deep AND in-depth reviews! Anyway, this was a smart move by Amazon. Gonna lead to a bunch of direct sales of cameras... I wonder how much they 'acquired' DPreview for?

Yeah, I wanna know how much they paid for it ;)

I'm less concerned with how much they paid and more what they're going to do with it. DPReview helped me buy a digital camera, and I've been recommending people use it to choose their own cameras since, well, 1999. I really hope Amazon doesn't gut it to pieces and suck out the soul of what's an amazing buying resource.

Nobody in his/her right mind will believe that the site will remain the same. It was excellent as long as it lasted. Phil worked his a** off to make great reviews - sometimes to my utter disappointment about a certain attractive model - and while doing so he saved me a bundle of money which I might have spent on the wrong camera. The forums were great for insider tips and exchange on camera flaws etc. I'm afraid that they may be edited for "malicious content" in the future... The good times are over now, and I would guess that 6 months from now we will see changes in attitude and bias towards certain brands... Phil, take your money and enjoy life! No hard feelings - your deserve it and I would possibly do the same. Thank you for your great contribution to the camera world!
