PumpTop TVI like to spend as little time as possible at a gas station. I just want to fuel-up and get out of there before I realize how far the price of gasoline has risen over the past months. However, Westinghouse Digital Electronics seems to think that it can grab five minutes of our attention by installing "PumpTop TV" display systems at thousands of gas pumps across the U.S.

Serviced by AdtekMedia, the network will deliver news, sports, entertainment, weather, traffic, and advertising to consumers while they're pumping gas, hoping to reach more than 100 million drivers each month. These systems include "dual 19" widescreen high-resolution displays (on both sides of the pump), computer, and networking components with wireless delivery along with a server backbone."

In addition, Richard Houng, CEO of Westinghouse Digital Electronics states "Over the next few years we plan to place as much LCD technology out of the home as in the home." Great, just when I want to get away from the television when I'm out!

PumpTop TV is currently being rolled out in Los Angeles, with other cities to follow such as San Francisco, San Diego, Phoenix, Dallas, and Houston.

These guys can kiss my ass. Union 76 sells Top Tier gas for about the same price.. bye bye, Shell!

I hope these LCDs aren't as static-prone as the old bube-tube I had as a kid.

Forget about the fears of cell-phones causing gas-pump fires.

These things could give a whole new meaning to the term "explostive advertising."

These have been at my local Shell stations in north San Diego county for at least a couple of months now. I no longer get gas at Shell as a result. If they want to sell me gas for $.30 to $.40 a gallon cheaper than everywhere else, maybe I'll watch their ads while I pump gas, but I refuse to pay $3.40 and up for regular unleaded and be forced to watch ads while I do it. I really hope these things don't catch on.

I agree Dan, I hope these don't catch on either. How much more advertising can we, as consumers consume? It's becoming out of control IMHO.

This looks like a great way to make people buy more gas because they aren't paying attention to the gauges.

So, anyone making a pool on how long until some hacker figures out how to take over these screens?

This infuriates me. I hate advertisements and I hate having to yell over this stupid thing blaring ads at me while I'm on the phone pumping gas. (no you won't blow up that is a myth...) They should at least give you the option to shut it off, or as mentioned above knock some money off the gas. When I am paying over $50 to fill up my mustang I should not have to listen to this BS!!! I think instead of just not getting gas at these places (let's face it we all have convenient places we tend to always get gas) let's make it known this is why. Leave a nice big note (on paper, I am not advocating vandalism here) and write a letter to the station owner telling them why you won't be stopping there for a fillup x times per week anymore and how much your fill up usually costs. Given that the station owners supposedly only make a "few cents" per gallon, that may hurt. I wouldn't bother with the attendant, look up who owns the store an make your feelings known to them.

Very interesting to read some folks are annoyed with this technology. I for one like it. I agree none of us enjoys paying prices we may think are high for gasoline, but sounds like most of the negative comments are not about the technology, but about a persons feelings about gas.

David....you miss the point. Yes we are upset about gas prices, but it is the annoyance of these ads that piss people off. I also no longer go to Shell Stations because I don't want to listen to advertising everywhere I go. This is just the start of this crap unless the consumers let the companies know this will negatively affect their sales.

Hey guys,

I for one am annoyed of the advertising I have to listen too, every time I have to fill up for gas. Wouldn't we all be happy if their was an advertising method that does not make noise but gets the message out. Well I have the solution, it is called paramountads.com, they do not interrupt you when you are on the phone and only catch the attention of those who are looking for something rather than being disturbed. Take a look reply back if you think it is a better way that those TV'S which interrupt and cause hazards. If you a business owner is interested or know someone who might benefit from this business opportunity visit this site (www.paramountads.com) or contact me via email at info@paramountads.com
