Unfortunately, flash drives still aren't cheap. So until prices drop and capacities increase, Samsung has a nice little alternative for everyone seeking faster booting times and better battery life: an 80-Gbyte hybrid hard drive.
Samsung said today that its R55 laptop will now feature an optional 80-Gbyte, 5,400rpm drive coupled with a 256-Mbyte flash drive and claims that the combination will consume 32 percent less power, offer a 26 percent increase in data reading, and boost data-writing speed by up to 71 percent--all for $1,923.
The company started shipping its HHDs to OEMs last month, and while Samsung says the R55 notebook is an "industry first," LG actually announced their HHD-equipped R400 laptop in March...which also happens to house Samsung's MH80 hybrid drive.

LG didn't announce anything...the LG "announcement" was actually just a rumor based on one online retailer's listing the LG R400 as including a hybrid drive...but the pre-release reviews of the three LG R400 models make no mention of hybrid hard drives, e.g. http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/notebooks/ontheradar/0,39050980,62006844,00.htm so it looks like it was bogus...Engadget suggested that the stats seemed fishy, with the price appearing to be too low.
