No, you didn't read that wrong: Some really smart physicists at Purdue University in Indiana have found a technique that may make objects as big as a plane disappear--something about bending light beams around a series of teeny, tiny needles so that light goes around whatever the cloak is draped over. The actual science of it all sails clean over my head, but still, how cool is that?!
The preliminary design will be published later on this month in the journal Nature Photonics, but the delay in actual production of the invisibility cloak doesn't stop my Harry-Potter-loving mind from running wild. Wild, I tell you!
Of course the scientists' initial suggestions for the cloak's use are to help disguise soldiers from night vision goggles, and hide objects from targeting lasers. But imagine what the technology could do for wallflowers and voyeurs...
My personal favorite potential application: Hiding from you boss when you just know he's gonna make you come into work on Saturday.
Tell us what you'd use the cloak to hide from.
