Today, Taiwan-based Genius announced the Traveler 355 Laser Mouse, said to be the world's first Opto Mouse. Featuring 1600 dpi, what makes this mouse unique is its touch sensor. That's right--the company has replaced the scroll wheel we're so used to seeing on a mouse with a touch scroll panel, allowing "multidirectional scrolling".
"The most revolutionary function of Genius Traveler 355 Laser is that, one can browse the Internet or documents more efficiently by just touching the OptoWheel (the blue eye)." In addition, if you move the OptoWheel slightly, the "turbo-scrolling" function will let you scroll forward or backward at a rapid speed (up to one hundred pages per second) when perusing Web sites.
Will it replace the optical laser mouse we've all come to know and (on most days) love? We'll have to see, once the Traveler 355 is available in about a month. It will be compatible with Windows Vista, XP, 2003, and 2000 as well as Mac OS X. I'm definitely getting one in for testing!

So...this thing needs to be really precise, which touch sensors rarely are. I can already see myself very frustrated at this thing. My finger spasms and I'm 487 pages away from where I wanted to be.
I'll stick with the scroll wheel, thanks.
