Anyone who watches Mythbusters regularly knows that their attempt to create a personal flying machine from scratch in episode 32 was met with lackluster results. However, a similarly looking unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was built using Debian Linux and open-source flight control software; albeit a 9 pound version that fits in a backpack.
The Trek Oviwun has a GPS system that gives it autonomous flight and position control and it can fly into tight spaces, hover in one spot and is equipped with night vision cameras. The inside houses a VersaLogic's PC/104-Plus form-factor Puma SBC (single-board computer) and an operating system built upon Debian Linux.
A limited number of these are available through Trek's beta testing program but at $15,000 I would hope there's some espionage in your future to take advantage of it. Is it wrong that the first thing that comes to mind when seeing this is an image of my old G.I. Joe action figures strapped in for the ride? [via LinuxDevices]
