Thought Lenovo was just in the business of making those meh-lookin' ThinkPads? Well think again. The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (or BOCOG) unveiled the official 2008 Olympic Torch today, and credit goes to none other than computer manufacturer Lenovo.
Known as the "Cloud of Promise," Lenovo's design was selected from a pool of more than 300 competitor themes, according to officials, and was fashioned from a polished aluminum-magnesium alloy. Combining "a sleek and modern design with historical Chinese symbolism," the torch also weighs in at a little more than 2 pounds, and will be carried around the world in the Olympic Torch Relay just before the games get underway in August of '08.
According to Lenovo, the design team, which consisted of an international group from Germany, Singapore, the U.S., and Japan, spent more than 10 months working on the torch design.
It's inspired by the shape of a traditional Chinese scroll, and the imagery of the 'Cloud of Promise' represents the traditions of China. According to Yingjia Yao, the executive director of Lenovo's Innovation Design Center in Beijing, the shape, texture, and technology of the torch are meant to evoke the Olympic spirit.
"We approached the design of the torch with the same process we use in designing our personal computers," Yao said in a statement. "First we explore the connection between the user and the solution we create for them, looking at factors like size, weight, features, etc. Then we encourage the Lenovo design team to take a fresh approach to make the product uniquely and friendly to the customer."

Note -- "Yingjia" is the designer's given name. Chinese names put the surname - in this case, "Yao" - first.

You should add "China" to the list of where members of the design team are from.
