While many opponents of videogame violence in America believe that games corrupt our youth, Mexico is hoping that the lure of technology and an Xbox is enough to help curb gun use in the crime-ridden town of Tepito. The going exchange rate for guns to tech is simple: trade in a high caliber weapon such as a machine gun and you'll get a computer worth around $769, smaller guns net you cash or an Xbox. The consoles and software on the PC's are donations from Microsoft.

This government initiative is part of an overall effort to stem the infestation of drug gangs and they're already reporting some progress as they've taken in 17 guns on the first day of the program. If the program is successful they'll extend the program into other regions. The guns for tech programs sounds like a novel idea but I'm not so sure extended Halo sessions will be enough to stem what appears to be a very deep-rooted issue with drug violence. Best case scenario? Drug dealers will be too busy playing on Xbox Live to bother shooting anyone in real life. On the other hand, savvy gang members may use the technology to upgrade their criminal aspirations and enjoy a round of Grand Theft Auto on the side. [via Reuters]

I heard about this too on the news this morning! Don't forget that kids can swap larger weapons like machine guns for entire computer systems! Swords to plowshares, now guns to technology? :D

Did you ever think they could just use their guns to rob someone of the computer or an xbox? That is the dumbest idea ever. Law abiding citizens would give up there guns, but scumbags would use the gun to get what they want.
