Hyping the Sony PSP as a media player when the largest memory stick Sony could offer was 2 GB didn't really make too much sense. Sure, that's enough space for saving games but when you add a music library and movies to that card it fills up pretty quick. Thankfully, Sony is increasing the capacity of their Memory Stick Pro Duo's to 8GB and is selling them for $325 on March 9th in Japan. However, the new 8GB flash drive will only work with Sony Laptops and Cybershot cameras sold in 2007, so compatibility issues with within Sony's own memory sticks continue to be an issue. You can check out their compatibility page to see which memory stick is right for you, although they still need to include the 8GB Memory Stick Pro Duo.
An 8GB option for the Playstation Portable gives the floundering handheld a bit more flexibility but purchasing the new Memory Stick Pro Duo and a PSP could run you at least $525 (since Sony has refused to lower the price on the PSP to at least try and compete with Nintendo's successful handheld). For that amount you might as well pick up a PS3 and walk away with a Blu-ray player. [via Gizmodo]

So, lemme get this straight: Sony locks consumers into using their proprietary Memory Schtick, and then can't make their own card backward compatible with their own products?

Funny how that works, eh Kyle? Progress through force! Upgrade or be damned! :(
I'm seriously glad I stay far far away from Memory Stick and well, pretty much anything Sony that's not inocuous like a pair of headphones or a DVD player.

Omer, unfortunately the 8GB will not work in your SONY CyberShot DSC-F707. The largest you can use in that model is the 128MB Memory Stick PRO.
