It's tit for tat these days in the SSD industry. So with SanDisk's introduction of a 32-Gbyte solid-state drive last week, it was Samsung's turn yesterday to answer. And answer it did. This is one we knew was coming: A 1.8-inch, 64-Gbyte Flash-based SSD that not only doubles the capacity of the company's current offering, but is also said to be (in terms of read and write performance) 20 and 60 percent faster than Samsung's existing single-level cell (SLC) 32GB drive.
According to Samsung, production is scheduled to begin on the 1.8-inch drop-in replacement in Q2. And in case you're wondering whether this drive will find a cozy little 1.8-inch home anytime soon, Samsung just got done showing off a flash-powered laptop at CeBIT earlier this month. That guy was reportedly equipped with the 32-Gbyte SSD drive that now appears to be old news.
Okay, who's next in line? I think you're up, Toshiba...

So will I be able to just drop this in my OQO Model 2 (when it ships) and improve both read/write AND battery performance (at an expensive price of course!)?

Well, Samsung filled its own Q1P with its 32GB version earlier this year. But isn't the OQO Model 2 coming with a 60GB HDD? Not sure how worth it that would be considering these guys are gonna cost an arm and a leg (which is equivalent to $900).
