As part of Microsoft's IDSA PC Design Competition, graphic designers and dreamers across the country are sending their ideas for next generation computers and peripherals to Microsoft to show off their talent, their ingenuity, and possibly a $10,000 grand prize. There are four categories for PC designs; personal productivity, entertainment, communication and mobility, and living and lifestyle, but only one winner from the four will be announced. The entries have been flowing in and can be viewed by anyone and voted on by anyone with a Microsoft .NET Passport account (or a hotmail account, by extension) and the entries range from the functional to the incredibly weird to the outright impossible.
One entry that caught my eye is the Pussy Cat PC, entered by Yanko Design. The Pussy Cat PC, according to the designer, is a "real mobile PC that implements A.I. robot and air refresher," glows at night, moves on its own, and can use facial recognition technology to recognize users and its owner, provide reminders, and do essentially everything else that a normal PC can do.

Any fans of the webcomic Questionable Content (http://questionablecontent.net/) might recognize the idea; some of the computers in the comic are called "AnthroPCs," mischievous little devils that look like iPods with arms and legs, or like cute little robots that always seem to get into trouble. The Pussy Cat PC doesn't appear to be quite as troublesome though; the designers imagine it as playing with friends and visitors, keeping safe watch over your home while you're away, and freshening up the air at night.
Keep in mind the Pussy Cat PC is a design fantasy, as are all of the entries in the IDSA PC Design Competition; few if any of the ideas will ever make it to production and the entries are judged on creativity and innovation, not on practicality. We may never see the Pussy Cat PC in our homes, but its fun to think about how we might use one.
