The showdown between HD-DVD and Blu-ray is far from over, even if Blu-ray has been outselling its rival format lately. And while Microsoft remains a strong supporter of HD-DVD, that doesn't mean it wouldn't support Blu-ray if that is the format left standing. GameDaily is reporting that U.K. Xbox head Neil Thompson hinted at the possibility of support, should Blu-ray prevail.

But don't expect to see the format war over anytime soon. Sony finally released the PlayStation 3 yesterday in Europe, and while analysts are predicting a Sony victory in a few years time, the launch was much quieter than last fall's PS3 debut in America. So dig in for a long format battle. You know the only real losers will be consumers.
