i876-smallest-1.JPG Nextel's iDen network isn't dead, Motorola says. To prove that they're still innovating in iDen phones, they showed a surprise new handset today at CTIA: the i876, the first iDen phone based on Motorola's new Linux/Java platform.

Motorola reps were careful to say the i876 is an "international" phone, meaning Sprint hasn't committed to picking it up. But they should. The i876 has the 2-megapixel camera that Nextel's current high-end phones have, along with a super-bright 176x220 screen, a new music player that supports A2DP Bluetooth stereo headphones, a mini-USB charging and sync jack (hurrah!) and the usual iDen call quality. The model I looked at didn't have the final software, but the phone will have a new main menu with new, flashier icons. And it has that Linux core -- which means better stability, more innovative third-party applications and more multimedia, at least in theory.

The phone should be appearing somewhere in the world during the fourth quarter of this year. Lots o' photos after the jump.

On these shots of the Linux-powered i876, check out the new main-menu icons - and how, on this software build, lower level icons look just like ordinary Nextel stuff once you drill down. Remember, this isn't a Nextel phone ... yet.

I hope Nextel releases the i876 soon, because the phone looks good and I do not like the setup, limited features or the appearance of Sprint's sub-par hybrid phones. I also hope someone buys Nextel from the horrid Sprint but that's another story. It's nice to see that Motorola has not abandoned iDen yet and I hope they figure out how to upgrade network capacity and performance so I don't have to suffer making calls on Sprint's decent, but sometimes very unreliable, network. I plan to get the i876 if it's released, even if I have to get one on Ebay.

I would still keep up with my i885 n my t mobile wing I like them both. I don't think I need this phone. I already seen this phone. it has almost all the same features that the i880 has. PPL thers more plenty of phones out ther dat have better features dan dis fone. I still think the i930 is better dan dis fone.
